The BloodVaine Epic

Chapter 58: Return To Orion

It was night. The stars were out, giving light to the three travelers on the old road. Alex and Walf had decided to stay with Logon. After all, he had saved them during the forest fire and they figured they owed it to him. Besides, they would be were going back toward Classic LEGOland and Alex figured that it might provide a chance to return Walf to his home. Alex had, however, insisted on traveling by night. He didn’t want to be caught by Crusaders.
The company traveled all night and as the dawn broke they stopped for some rest. Walf, for the first time, was getting rather tired of their adventures, which seemed to consist only of traveling and getting burned alive. He was just about ready to lay down to sleep when something happened.
From out of no where a wolf leapt into view. It ran strait at Alex, knocking him over before he could defend himself. In a second Logon was on his feet and racing to Alex’s aid. His burns had been greatly reduced during the course of their travels and he was now nearly fully healed. Logon raised his weapon to attack, but stopped, confused. The wolf was licking Alex.
“Urgun!” Alex smiled as he pushed the wolf off of him, “It’s good to see you again old friend.”
Alex embraced the wolf and then, seeing the confused looks of Walf and Logan tried to explain.
“Gentlemen, this is Urgun. Urgun, these are my friends, Logon and Walf. Urgun is an old friend of mine. Why, I haven’t seen you since our adventure with those crusaders, have I Urgun?”
The wolf licked Alex’s face as the man laughed. Logon and Walf joined in, relieved that the wolf was friendly. But before they could really enjoy the moment, the wolf started acting up. He ran to the foot of a tree and growled, staring into the thicket of trees.
       “What is it?" Walf asked.
       “He hears something.” Alex answered.
Logon looked skeptical. “How do you know th-”\
“I don’t know. It’s some kind of telepathy that I share with Urgun.”
Alex was right. In a moment the men heard it too. It sounded like someone was coming toward them from the trees. This proved to be the case as the noises grew louder and finally ended as a man burst out of the thicket. He was covered with all sorts of sticks and leaves and he was panting and out of breath. At first he looked shocked to find three persons in his path, but before anyone could even move his shocked look grew even more astonished as he stared at Walf.
“Why Walf my boy! What on earth are you doing here?”
Walf blinked once. He blinked twice. It was Jos! Needless to say, Walf was astonished. H e had never expected to see Jos again, let alone out in the wilds of Crusader land. The other two men were equally astonished and it took quite a bit of explaining (once Walf found his voice) to satisfy their curiosity and his.
“Well now we’re all introduced,” Alex said. “But you still haven’t told us how you came to be here, running around in the woods.”
“I’m afraid that’s the bad part.” said Jos. “I see by you’re talk that you haven’t heard. Likely because you’ve been traveling by night and not stopping anywhere. But you should know if you’re trying to get to the Black Knights.”
       “Know what?” said Walf impatiently.
Jos didn’t scold him for interrupting. Instead he looked down sorrowfully, thinking of how to best say it before he started.
“Walf,” he said with tears in his eyes. “There was an attack on the capitol city. A man named BloodVaine has taken over. He’s killed the Emperor. Your parents Walf they...they're…”
Jos stopped, choking up and at the same time cursing himself.
Some man you are Jos. You can’t even tell it to him straight.
But Walf didn’t need to be told the whole story. You could see by the tears in his eyes that he knew his parent’s fate.
       “Oh, I’m sorry Walf."
The bread maker embraced the boy.
       “I’m so, so sorry.”
Alex and Logon watched silently. There had been two reunions that morning. One bringing joy, the other bringing sorrow. Alex thought of the road ahead. The new Jos brought would change their plans. A new path would have to be chosen. But that could wait. Today was a day of mourning. And as the sun rose, illuminating the waking world, Alex couldn’t help but think that the future of Dametreos was looking darker.
