Forum for Building Tips?

Its been on my mind for some time, but it seems to me that these boards could really use a forum dedicated to building tips and advice.

Has this ever been discussed or even considered? It just strikes me as being a bit odd that we have a forum dedicated to photographing MOCs and other relevant publishing techniques, yet we don't have anything comprable to directly discuss building techniques. Articles are nice, but they are far too rare, and may not answer a builder's questions.

So I am curious to know; is this a worthwhile consideration? Moreover, how hard would it be to implement? (if its difficult, then it probably should be ignored) I only wonder, because when I'm MOCing, I often have questions, yet I find myself without an appropriate forum to ask them. For me, the MOC forum is more about the end product than the process of getting there, so I am frequently left to figure things out on my own.

Does anybody else feel this way?

I do! I've wanted something like this too, and have been sitting on the suggestion for a while- thanks for posting!

In addition, it would give an opportunity to post WIPs- often a comment on one of my completed MOCs will point out something that could have been changed in the early stages of construction, but by then it's too late.

I would love to see a forum like that. It would be useful, and something which would draw attention. Also, I think many new members, especially ones just recovering from a dark age, would find it incredibly helpful.

Great idea! As I think I've mentioned on the forum before, I've started articles on occasion but never finished one. I think writing them seems intimidating to a lot of people, and they're a lot of work.

I know I would be very willing to give advice and help people out in a forum, and I'm sure a lot of others here would be too. It's a much friendlier method than articles, and can be much more specific!

Fantastic suggestion. It might also be a good way of creating articles. In the long run a summary of a particular thread could make an excellent article, drawing on the skills of several builders.

From what I know about php Boards, adding a new forum would be quite easy, though I could be wrong

I'm glad that there are some other boardmembers out there who feel the same way. I'd really like to hear an Admin's input on this one though.

I was under the impression that the articles were there to help with building tips. Unfortunately, they're not updated or added to very often, but they are still pretty helpful.

Great idea! I know I'd probably be willing to condense & refine threads into articles, if it turned out to be a worthwhile prospect!

I think this is a great idea Blueandwhite.

I would definitely vote for a forum like that. I have some building techniques which I would be willing to share. And likewise I am sure that I could be shown a lot of building techniques that I wouldn’t have even considered for my castle building.

In past discussions, the admins have not been in favor of adding additional forums. We believe that many fan sites have sub forums that are rarely used enough to warrant their creation and moderation. The admins will discuss this issue and get back to you about it. In the mean time, anyone who writes a building article can contact us. We will put your article on the main page and perhaps somewhere permanent on the site.

I think that this makes sense. Although I was in favour of this idea, I see on some websites, like the Eurobricks pirate forum, sub forums which are not fully utilized.

Whilst I agree that there needs to be more focus on general building discussion...couldn't all this just go in Castle MOCs?

I whole-heartedly agree.

Still, I think that this is a worthwhile topic. Remember, these forums are what we, the users, make of them.

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work that well. Castle MOCs (and General) forums simply feature too many threads. In my experience, building advice and questions frequently go unnoticed. People visit the MOC forum to view and constructively comment on MOCs. These two forums have between 10x and 20x the number of posts that forums such as Publishing, Medieval Life and Displays.

In all honesty, I wouldn't have brought this up if I didn't feel that it was a worthwhile topic. Still, I do understand Architect and the other Admins' points of view on this subject. Perhaps one of the infrequented forums could be expanded to include building tips. Again, now that the topic has been brought up, I think it is best to let the Admins discuss it and let things fall where they may.

I agree. I agree because I have building ideas, but to post them in Castle MOCs, it doesn't get looked at, and not very many people view it. I would totally go for it.
