LEGO Dots

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

Everyone loved Clikits, right? Or to make an even deeper cut the old Scala Jewelry sets. Anyway LEGO announced something new, the Dots line. Here are reviews at Brothers Brick and Brickset.

These are not castle, not figs, IMO garish colors, and marketed to younger girls, so why make note of them here? Because these are full of 1x1 tiles, 1x1 round tiles, 1x1 quarter round tiles, probably also some of the 1x1 heart tiles, in tons of colors and some of them printed. Think of the mosaic possibilities! I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with.

On the positive...yay lots of quarter tiles. Yay cool puppy print tiles. Maybe there will be other cool things. Maybe the bands can be used for watch bands. (Hey I am trying to focus on the positive here!) Diamond tile...always a plus for those of us who like shiny things.

On the okay this is okay side...if you go down the girls toy aisles you do find jewelry making kits and craft kits. So I guess it is okay. And I am pretty sure they are doing targeted research so it must be girl approved. That is okay.

On the no thank you side...not exactly colors I will need/use often and not in a quantity that can be useful. My limited LEGO budge won't be spent on this.

My daughter LOVES jewelry making kits - got two different ones for Christmas and has picked them out multiple times when looking for birthday gifts for friends' parties - so I agree this is very market-tested. I'm just thinking mosaic builders could easily use these in the style of pointillist painting, things like this:

or to pick a more castle-relevant example:

I hadn't even known there were quarter round tiles.

I just bought the set 41935 (the one with a bit over 1000 parts, none of them printed) some time ago, since it was in 50% discount in a store that is already the cheapest one to begin with. I don't have any plans of how to use these yet, but surely there will be.
