New Pirates set (sets?) coming! Contest!

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

LEGO has announced on ReBrick that "early next year" there will be a new pirate ship set. There is also a contest (follow the link quick, this is only for a week) to name the new ship. They say the ship will be "joining Brickbeard’s Bounty and the Black Sea’s Barracuda", so that implies to me that this will be a large ship of similar size. The fact that they have a new "LEGO Pirates" logo implies to me that this is not a one-off, nor is it a license tied to PotC or the LEGO Movie, but rather will be the anchor of a bonafied official in-house theme. Of course this is delving into rampant speculation, as there is no promise of additional sets, but I'm guessing we'll get at least one wave (note my nautical language? :) ) of pirate sets ranging from this ship at the top price point down to some sort of "pirate on a raft with a shark" at the low end, with a series of different sets in between.
I just saw this on EuroBricks, but I see there is already an ongoing discussion of this news at our sister-site, Forbidden Cove.

I wish I was 16. Then I would suggest "The Sea Scourge" and "The Manta". :)

My understanding is that they are starting production on new POTC movies. Perhaps they are planning on having this new line on the shelves to coincide with those movies, rather than licensing them.

Speculation is all we have. We have nothing confirmed except that ship sticking out of a box. And they have created labels and what not for just one set before. If it is a big direct to customer set, exclusive to LEGO only, they do these things. They have released those kinds of sets without a line before, often at the end of a line but never the less, without a whole line of sets to go with. If this was a tie into POTC, I'm pretty sure they would have said it was. Licensing is a pretty legal concept. And since POTC is a Disney license...and Disney is extremely demanding and meticulous for how product they own the license do is made...I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't license a set that doesn't have a nice and tidy tie in with their movies. But having said that, I would much prefer it not be a licensed set. At this point, I'm just happy to see any set in the pirate area. Gee, I was super excited just to see the fig set they came out with a few months ago in pirates.

I think Kev is only suggesting that the new LEGO Pirates line might be timed to benefit from a surge in Pirates interest generated by a new PotC movie.

It's not much different than how the original LEGO Space theme was created to benefit from a surge of interest in space ships generated by the Star Wars films. Likewise, the Forestmen were clearly inspired by various tales of Robin Hood, but TLG didn't obtain a license for any specific Robin Hood book or film. They just did their own take on a popular theme.

More so than that, the Disney kids show Jake and the Neverland Pirates could be a big draw. Either way, whatever way that pirate starts happening is a good thing.

That'd be great if new Pirate sets came out. I would definitely have to get my hands on a few. :D
