LEGO Ideas results - Birds and Big Bang

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

LEGO Ideas has made an announcement about the first 2014 review. YouTube link here. Drumroll please ... LEGO Birds and Big Bang will both become sets, and they have not outright rejected the Dr. Who sets (IMO this means there will definitely be some Dr. Who set in the future, maybe one of these or maybe they are looking at other options).

Congrats to the builders!

Birds=pretty cool as I do quite like birds.

Big Bang Theory=Why? This was the one I least expected to see as a Lego set.

I am thou very happy to hear they're thinking about Doctor Who. I mean it took it like two weeks or so to get 10,000 and two out of six of the review sets was Doctor Who. So please make one.

Will I be the only one here who plans to get the BBT set? The show amuses me, and I was really impressed by the level of detail and the clever mini-builds in the project.

Oh I can understand why they have BBT there. Its a popular franchise and considered as geeky and nerdy and all that, so it will find its customers. I never watched an episode though

The birds on the other hand are really a fun idea. Perhaps a bit risky - more risky than BBT for sure - but with their clever use of parts they suit much better to lego and what it originally stands for, license-ware aside.

I AM SO PUMPED!!!! At least for the Bird Project! :D That is one that I have been following for years (on MOCpages and CUUSOO, and now Lego Ideas), and am so thrilled that it was chosen! :D I can't wait to see how many of Thomas's designs they will use!

I am definitely not a fan of the BBT, I would have much rather seen Doctor Who. However, I am glad that Doctor Who is still being considered, hopefully they make that a set as well. :)

I like the birds, but would've preferred Doctor Who to BBT, I'm a fan of the show

Not only that, but the characters are AFOLs. It's win-win for LEGO because they promote themselves with the license.

While neither are likely to tempt my wallet, it's always good to see new stuff coming out of the Lego Ideas project, as it means there's more likely to be something I DO like in future!

I've been surprised by the some of the reaction to the The Big Bang Theory set, as people seem to forget that it is possibly the biggest sit-com on TV right now (at least in terms of actors wages, so it must be bringing in big money) which surely converts into a large merchandising market.

One of the main points of setting up Cuusoo/Lego Ideas, was for TLG to draw in fans from other hobbies/interests. And the 'geek' world is obviously ripe for the picking, seeing as the TBBT characters themselves often make reference to Lego. So you could see that as a 'brand fit'. I know there's been suggestions the some of the shows themes aren't child-friendly, but that wasn't a problem for the BTTF or Ghostbusters projects, and it seems Lego Ideas is gearing more towards AFOLs and potential AFOLs and creating sets for display rather than play, so think they can take more risks without damaging the 'child-friendliness' of Lego's other main product lines.

I'll be interested to see who both approved sets change for production. I'd guess we'd see a reduction in the number of the TBBT character figs, though losing the two girls (though secondary characters) could create grief.

I'm not surprised the Dr Who sets were pushed to the next review. Dr Who is a multi-million pound merchandising franchise which I'm guessing would take a lot longer to iron out a deal, especially seeing that another brand seem to currently make Dr Who building sets. I'm sure TLG are keen to make it work, but imagine there's a lot more legal wrangling involved.
Less talking, more MOCing.

Birds: Great choice. It was my favorite among the nominees, and I will definitely buy this. It's cute, should be fun to build, and it's quite different from the types of sets that normally get into production.

BBT: I am not as interested in licensed stuff, but I think BBT is a great license to choose for reasons stated by others above. The final model's price, design, and included figures will determine whether I buy this one.

As for Dr. Who, I can't get excited about paying for two figures and a blue box. The second set shown looked more interesting, but it was probably too ambitious in terms of scenes, included figures, etc. I'm sure it will happen eventually.

Happy, happy, happy...with the birds at least. They are the one creation I really wanted to get through, and then I would have wanted Doctor Who. I know these aren't the final designs, but I really can't see the BBT set being at all useful for FOLs, only as a model for the show's fans.

If that stuff is printed and not stickered I'll probably get the Big Bang set. If there are a bunch of stickers, probably not. Birds, though, I really like.

Hey all,

You've probably seen this, but the official Birds set has been revealed.

I love how these are remarkably similar to the original proposed model - I'm guessing they got really burned by complaints about the BTTF set redesign. The set will cost $45 and come out in January.

The birds project was perfect for LEGO Ideas. It is original, different, not to mention the size is good, allowing for a reasonable price range. This was the first Ideas set I supported, one of only a few. I really don't like the whole idea of having license themes released from LEGO ideas.

Way to go for Tom, Poulsom. The idea was well executed and the fact that LEGO stuck so closely to the original must make him proud.
I hope to pick one of these sets up in the new year.
