LEGO Ideas results - Labyrinth Marble Maze

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

LEGO Ideas has announced the next Ideas set, Labyrinth Marble Maze by Jason Alleman.

As much as I think this is a cool idea, and of course Jason's work is always great, IMO this is a bit of a 'meh' to me. I don't feel compelled to run out and buy this as I did some of the other Ideas sets. I kind of think this one benefited from a weaker review group where most of the sets under consideration were untenable:

Avengers Helicarrier - obviously a direct clash with the existing set. This illustrates the problem of an Ideas proposal in an IP that LEGO already has - either they've already considered something like this and rejected it, or they've already got something like this in product development. About the only possibility (IMO) of getting an Ideas set through in an existing IP would be if it is vastly different than any of the things LEGO normally makes - e.g. there was an Ideas proposal on life-size lightsabers.
Jurassic Park - Same problem of clashing with existing IP. Too bad, as the brick built dino in this Idea proposal is way cooler than the molded dinos in the existing sets.
Minas Tirith - Same issue. Too bad as some of us were hoping this Ideas set would give LEGO the impetus to put out more Lord of the Rings sets. Of course the inclusion of Lord of the Rings in the Dimensions game shows that LEGO is not fully done with Tolkien, so we can hope (a little).
Flying Dutchman - Same issue. Also this, also Minas Tirith and some of the others fall into the "way too ambitious" group. Let's face it, AFOLs will always have the ability to build things way bigger and more detailed than will go into all but a handful of huge sets costing well over $100. There's no indication that LEGO will release a huge set through the Ideas line.
Natural History Museum - Way too ambitious.
Goonies - This is a neat set, but kind of an odd IP to go after. Yes, they've done Back to the Future, so they've demonstrated they'll go for nostagia, but, c'mon, the Goonies? I lived through the 80's and have some fond remembrance of this movie (actually I watched the "Everything Wrong With ..." on it a week ago), but it's no where near the same league as BTTF.
Piano - a cute little model, but not something to stake the name of the Ideas line on.
F7A Hornet - still under review (possible over IP issues?)

So if all but maybe the Hornet are untenable, I wonder if the ball maze got through as the last option standing. I don't think they would do an announcement and have no sets. The next pool has several that I could see getting through, so it will be interesting to see what does.

Quite a cool idea! It seems to me there wouldn't be a huge market to sell this though. That is if it became an official set.

I actually like this idea a lot, and plan to buy a copy. And I don't buy sets very often anymore :)
