LEGO Batman Movie - spoiler alert

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey guys,

Spoiler alert.

So, what did you guys think? I saw this yesterday and have to say I was disappointed. To me it didn't have the magic of the LEGO Movie. All of my favorite bits were all of the geeky easter eggs, like when you saw a bunch of different Batmobiles in the Batcave and they basically had all of the different variations from various incarnations of Batman, like the one from the Adam West show, the one from BTAS, the various movies, etc. Calling back to the Bat-shark-repellent a couple of times, and some of the crazy villains from BTAS was fun. The bad, though, was that I really didn't care at all about the plot. It didn't have the heart of the original, with the interaction between Will Ferrell and his son, or the message of learning to be creative. The theme of needing other people just seemed really basic and uninspired. Also, I walked out of the first movie singing Everything is Awesome. A day later I couldn't hum a note of the song from the end.

Anyway, I so wanted to love this, and there were things I did like, but as a whole the movie fell flat for me. It felt essentially like putting one of the LEGO video games out as a movie - all of the fun jokes and references, no compelling plot.

What did you guys think?

You summed it up pretty well. I wasn't as disappointed as you, but I probably just had lower expectations. My favorite easter eggs were some of the villains that the Joker had with him

I thought it was pretty good. I'd go see it again in a 2nd run theater. I was obviously not nearly as good as the Lego Movie, but it would be pretty hard (impossible, even?) to top TLM.

It was certainly better than Batman v. Superman.

I was not real keen on the whole Phantom Zone plot and would have liked to have seen it focus more on just Batman characters.

I didn't care for the plot, but I enjoyed the style of humor ("PEW PEW PEW!") and chuckled plenty of times. Definitely not as good as The LEGO Movie. I think someone described it as a family-friendly Batman movie that happened to be "made with Legos."

I much preferred the aesthetic of The LEGO Movie also, in that *everything* was brick-built, even the clouds and water. That wasn't the case with this movie.

I agree with Steve that the Phantom Zone thing was weird, and we really only got cameos of a lot of fun/obscure Batman villains, but they weren't the focus that they could have been.

It was by no means as good as The Lego Movie, but it was entertaining while it lasted. Still, I agree that the plot is lacking. As someone with very limited knowledge of Batman in general, I suppose many of the references must not have registered...

I agree that The LEGO Batman Movie lacked the full magic of The LEGO Movie--but I think it's a LITTLE bit unfair to hold that comparison against it. I was entertained watching it (whereas, during the original, I was blown away walking out of it). Put it this way: The LEGO Batman Movie sat about where my hopes were for The LEGO Movie before I actually watched it: fun, not so dumbed down that adults couldn't watch it, and no more than that.

It may be significant in my evaluation to note that, as a comic book "fan," my fandom really doesn't go much deeper than the most generic knowledge of the comics and a viewer's knowledge of most of the movies.
