DIY Cape Tutorial

Post by fpavelar »

Hi guys!

I made a quick tutorial of how I cut custom DIY capes for my minifigs. I've developed a technique that provides a precise cutting and hole punching.

This is a One picture tutorial I've uploaded on Flickr:

And here are higher quality pictures I've uploaded to recently created second account for such purposes: https://flic.kr/s/aHskS9i1xk

I'm a brazilian Afol with a six month toddler at home; can't afford fortunes on beautiful Cape Madness stuff, nor can't afford original capes in bulk either. So I went for the DIY road.

Hope it's useful!

C&C always appreciated.

Good job making these capes.
I would suggest in your tutorial that you add:
1. What kind of cloth you used.
2. What size hole punch you used on the tool.
3. What template you used (example - if you just traced an official cape)
4. The purpose of the lighter and how you used it.
5. Any extra methods you used for sealing or preventing fraying.

I've often thought of trying my hand at DIY capes. Ship sails seem to be very expensive and this is a great alternative. I'd also like to see some more people tackle trying other fabric items like barding, tents, and tapestries. Again, good job and keep on customizing. :)
