Just back from dark age and new here

Post by Papy.G »

Hi everyone. :)

As a child, I've always been a big Lego fan, playing for hours and hours, building, collapsing, rebuilding, dreaming of living into human-sized lego world. But came the day I had to grow and go to the adult boring world, so legos were gathered into the nice jeans mat/pouch and went to take a long rest, quietly sleeping in a cardboard box.
Recently (actually one year and a half), I got back to Lego shelves in toy stores, and then, my girlfriend bought some City vehicles. Then, the offered castle line didn't take my breath, with only Knights and knights and knights to battle one with each other, and copies of sets' minifigs in barbie-scale wich were useless to me.
Well, the new castle line turned me on, (except the fantasy-side of ennemies), so I dug out my pouch to rebuild my old sets, but, I only had two little castle sets, all the rest was Legoland (City). Anyway, I bought some little new sets (with the fewer orcs and skeletons possible), and browsed ebay for older sets, and bought some complete sets, some parts bulks, some figs/accessory bulks.

Now, I have to part from my old sets to make room for next big castles to come, and then, for MOCs too.

My first MOC back from my dark age has been to mix 6036 "skeleton surprise" and 6034 "black monarch ghost" together to put the doors on the little castle, sure one can make a nicer little castle with these two, or a castle wall extension part with a door.

Castles I still dream of are 6073 or 6080, hope I'll be lucky enough to get them, one day, and not overpriced. For the next to come, I'm planning the 6074, original or legend I don't care, and 6085 too.

I will try to make interresting PAB MOCs, as I don't have room to play and build until I move.

Also, I wonder if I should keep some of my old sets for some rare part, because of the interrest in using them against the money I would get from these sets, thinking about the race in the city and its red arches, for example, or the holiday villa for the red tiles.

I'll post detailed listing for trade or sale in the appropriate section, in case someone is not too far to send to.

Thanks to you all for welcoming me this way. :)

Foamrider> If I get huge quantities of orcses in a bunch, I'll think about you for a trade.

Brianofbrick06> I must take good care of not getting in the MOCs section, if else, I will be captivated by all these amazing things and spend all my time contemplating them.

Smcginnis> You are very brave to learn French, it is not an easy way to go.
J'adore la citouille, en soupe et en confiture, principalement.

Donut> I don't manage to get rid of my old sets fast enough, probably because of the low prices on eBay in France these days, so I won't be in active searching for a while, and perhaps some of the ones I've listed will always be part of my dreams forever. If I manage to get all these castles in real world, what will remain to play with in my dreams? Dreams are to be dreamt after all.

I have a problem with Brickshelf, I didn't get my confirmation mail, then I can't connect to my account, and nobody answers my mails, is this website dead?

As soon as I'll be able to upload pictures on BS, I'll put some of my sets to go, some of the sets I'll keep, and some others of the loose parts I want to trade.

Perhaps should I list my sets I'll keep, to give an idea how little is the beginning.
For the classic side, I begun with the 6017 little crusaders' boat, then, the 6016 armour cart, back in the days. Recently, I got the 6054 forestmen's Hideout, 6036 skeleton surprise, 6034 black monarch's ghost and 6009 black knight. I also managed to sort 6012 siege cart, its siege workers, and 6061 siege tower's wall section and figs off a bunch of parts and figs I got, with loose falcons and some crusaders (both lions and crossaxles), Eventually, I got a dozen of loose forestmen wich came with a blue shaved wizard.
I think I have too much people for now, with no place to put them in, but they won't be this too much, the day I'll have one or two castles.

For the new castle line side, first came the soldier in impulse set, then, the wizard, the final joust, and the advent calendar, plus, another impulse soldier kept MISB, just in case. I plan to get the battle pack when i'll order spare parts at the PAB.

Hey Papy.G,

Welcome back to the hobby and welcome to CC! I understand wanting to sell off old sets to raise the money to buy new ones, but personally I'd hang on to them. I've still got my old classic spacemen, and even though I don't build space these days, I'm really happy I still have these from my childhood. You never know when a few years down the line you might kick yourself that you got rid of some old favorite set. Plus, all themes are just parts packs for castle anyway, so you can always use those bricks for your current building.

One thing I always like to remind people who are wanting to quickly build up a large collection so they can build big castles - remember, many of the people here who do have the huge collections have been in the hobby for years. If you buy a new set every now and then, especially when you can find things on sale or second-hand, in a few years you'll have a huge collection. So don't feel like you have to get together a lot of cash to buy it all at once - just set aside a few francs each week and buy things at a slower pace. In the meantime, you can build lots of great smaller MOCs - homes, catapults, microscale castles, vignettes - with even a very limited collection. I always say I'd rather see a small MOC done very well than a huge castle that's poorly done.

What are these "francs" you speak of? :tasty: Joking aside, that is great advice Bruce.

Papy.G: Welcome to the hobby, and welcome to CC! To parody a recent chant by a certain political party on this side of the pond - build, baby, build!I agree with Bruce - hang on to your old pieces and slowly build your collection. That's what I'm doing -- I did, by a stroke of fate, have a pair of very special classic space figs come to me. They were part of a set I bought for my nephew back in the early 80s and his mom sent them my way when she discovered my then-new hobby a two years ago. They're well worn and well-played with, but they are a treasure to me because that kid is 30 now!

Bruce N H> First idea was not only to raise the money, but mainly to save room, since most parts in my space sets, and in some others, might be unusable in castle, also, some are not sets I feel any nostalgia about, perhaps I'll keep one loose space minifig anyway. Since it doesn't raise much money selling them, I'll keep them to trade later, loose parts or full set, I'll see.

I don't want to build up a large collection very fast, but I look forward to what I should consider buying, even if it won't be before two years or five, untill then, I'll look on ebay, for example, the current price for what it's worth, and, if there is an opportunity, to get one cheap.
The problem with creating, is I am kinda chaotic, so I need parts to dig into, make some stuff, and re-create it with other parts once I'm almost finished with it.
Euro is the French current currency for approx. ten years now. Since you can't ignore it, I wonder if it is from an expression that you merged it (and wich one, I'm curious), or if you simply like this old currency name.

I don't feel like building in microscale, and don't like war machines, especially catapults, I'd better work on small modular wall sections first.

deathdog1> I'm almost same aged as your nephew. ;)
Space sets I have should then make you cry by nostalgia, If you had to see them.

If you are looking to build your parts collection quickly and randomly so you can have parts to just dig in and build with, look on ebay for the "I've grown out of my toys so I'm selling all of them" lots. Generally they are a fairly good buy if you don't get a bidding war going on. You also get a fairly good assortment of parts to tinker with. That's what I did and I ended up getting some castle wall & gate pieces that I'm using to make my 1st ever castle/keep(I'll be posting pics as I progress once I finish the outer wall).

Welcome to the CC!

Hope you enjoy your stay here.

If you do not like something in a set like skeletons or the orcs there are plenty of places/people who'd trade/buy/take them off your hands so I'd not worry about the set if you like it.

I just got back into Lego about a year and a half ago and really like the new fantasy line so I think it is a great time to get back in.

Bienvenue!

Hi, there is a while from my introduction on, and I wanted to make an update.

So I have had fewer time to play since my move than I had expected. Although, I managed to collect a little.

So I went through the 6090 almost complete (missing some parts and soldiers), and got some spares, noticeably among: old gray bricks, burps, one more Majisto, some soldiers from 677 with original swords and shields.
But the better was recently, my brother, on his son's demand, asked me if I was OK to trade a MISB 6243 and get as counterpart, 6021, 6030, 6061, and 6064. I probably wouldn't have dare to just dream of it but it was true! 6061 and 6064 came complete in box with booklet (well, missing the two extra yellow plumes from 6064, but who cares, they are not unique parts)!
It was this year's big deal.

Now I'm thinking forward for a new display, since the one I bought very rapidly showed it was too shallow when I had to build the 6090 into it to fit, and had to shrink a bit my 6243 too, now, there is the 6064, but surrounded by two 6061 walls, it fulfills its shelf, leaves no room enough to set up an assault down the wall.
For next investments, since I don't have time nor money for many hobbies, I'm wondering about wether selling my Zelda collection or not.
Next castle I'm aiming are from the 6073, 6080, and 6085, next parts are little round doors, a ghost, parts and figs for 6090 and 6059, parts for 6061 (except if parts/figs I already have are gone before)
Next to go will probably be 6036, since it is out of my period (6090 will be kept for parts, anyway, and completed, if possible.) another MISB 6243, some loose dragon soldiers, one Majisto, and perhaps the uncomplete 6061 or just the figs.

I'll try to have time to build some mocs, I have concepts in head for an oven, a counterbalanced drawbridge and its gatehouse with center upper wooden crenelation (from concepts seen in Fort la Latte and Murol), and a in-the-walls horse stable since my son loves horses.
