Weekly Set Review: Bat Lord's Catapult

Post by architect »

Join the weekly Classic Castle set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!

This week’s set is 6027 Bat Lord’s Catapult.

Bat Lord’s Catapult, released in 1997, was a catapult attached to a horse drawn cart for the Fright Knights. It came with a driver, a fright knight, and various accessories.

Well, there's nothing particularly wrong with this set. A good supply of weapons, a horse and cart wheels. The only really interesting piece is the cart-horse-turney-thing :D
Average, 7/10.

This is a nice set. I don't like the shape of the cart however
A good thing are the figures that this set has. Another good thing is that I actually have this set
I would give this set a 7/10

Hmm...Two well-armed knights? A Horse? Wheels? Accessories galore? Reasonably priced? Back then,a healthy 7/10, now, I wouldn't even stop to mark it before I bought it.

Firelight dancing off burnished blade
A Forestman sits
Wondering about the next day
But after three mugs of ale
Let it bring what it may.

Personally, this set really has nothing going against it, at least compared with the other Fright Knights. No Willa, no Batlord, good figs and a half-decent design. (Okay, the catapult is kinda ridiculous, but remove it and you have a pretty decent waggon).

Parts: 6.5/10
Playability: 6/10
Figs/Accessories: 8.5/10
Design (then): 7/10
Design (now) 8.5/10

Overall score: 5.3/10

Definately the best small FK set.

Doesn't do much for me. Lame catapult. Take away the catapult and you have a pretty unimpressive cart. An the other hand, taken as a parts set to work with, it has a couple of nice figs, a horse, and enough of a cart to build on. 6/10, and that's primarily for the parts.

And lets add the Lugnet rating just to see how close I am to the collective perception: 58/100.
Redwine the Ribald: Stare long enough into the abyss...
Two-Tonic Tippler: ...and you spit into it.

Nice army builder. The design is crap, and the parts could be better. I would pick it up in a heartbeat, but that is mainly for the figures. :)

I have 3 of that set. Actually as a cart it's not bad at all. Somewhere between the size of the small carts and the bigger ones. Don't understand exactly the catapult idea though (well as a catapult it's really worthless).

I like the 2 minifgs, the black knight from the FK theme is great.
The entire shape of it is weird like all the other FK sets but maybe it's also the mysterious beauty of them.

I'll be generous and give it 8/10.

I may not be a fan of the Fright Knight line, but this set was a bit of gem at least the figs were. The fluted breastplate and the studded shirt are both excellent additions to the castle line. This is one of the few sets that did not include the Bat Lord and for that I have to give it a better score than I would for the less than stellar cart. 6/10 then, 8.5/10 compared to KKII.

After a long absence, I have returned. I can't wait to start building again.

Hmmm, 8/10. I like it a lot. Good pieces for its size. Not the worst design ever. 8)
I build, therefore I am.

Hello!

A plank between two axles? A bat standing (bats usually hang, don't they?) on the back of a horse? Some flames that are transported to be shot with a wooden barrel? The barrel would burn to ashes before anybody gets the chance to throw the catapult. That's a bad bat set. The second worst after/before (depends on your viewpoint) Willa's Windship (6037). The guy who made this up probably was in a bad mood the particular forenoon he spent on creating this ... thing.

The figs are OK but nothing I'd write a long letter about to my sweetheart. If I had any.

I never really liked the Fright Knights. Too much magic involved. This set has some good pieces in it, however. I'd give it 4/10.

All this is good for is a army builder, and getting a silver sword. As Jojo said, the catapult is worthless.
Ill give it a 3/10

Is THIS a catapult??

What a strange shape! A light cart, two ugly torchs, a barrel on a plank... This is ugly and this cannot be a catapult!

A agree with Jojo!

The first #6030 (http://www.1000steine.de/users/brickset ... 6030-1.jpg) is a catapult!
