Just wondering what the everyone thinks are the most rare sets. I have started collecting castle sets again and I find there are a few that seem to come up on ebay very rarely if at all. I have been concentrating on collecting sets from 1984-1996. These are sets that I have found to be rare in my own collecting adventures starting with the one I perceive to be most hard to find.
1. 6023 Maidens Cart
2. 6011 Black Knights Treasure
3. 6067 Guarded Inn
4. 6079 Dark Forest Fortress
Anyone else agree that the sets on this list are harder to find than others?

I imagine most sets from that era are pretty rare. I've got most, but am missing the blacksmith shop (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6040) and the black knight's treasure (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6011).
I think both iterations of the Knights Challenge, 1584 and 6060, (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/1584) are pretty rare too...

Problem with a lot of sets is: They have not been available everywhere. So to my knowledge 6011, 6023 and 6067 weren't in stores in the US, except for Shop-at-Home, so they are quite rare there, hence rare on ebay.com. Also 6079 (as well as the other two Dark Forest sets) was kind of a limited relase. In Germany for instance it wasn't even in the catalogue but on tretail only in one or two chains. If you didn't go to those stores you never knew these sets existed.
Also most if not all of the small polybag sets like 1491, 1712 and so on, as well as all the subsets from Value Packs and Bonus Packs (1974, 1843, 1891,…) were not available outside America, so naturally they are rare. 1680 on the other hand was only sold in the UK, as far as I know. 1584, the EU-version of 6060, was a very limited release in ... I don’t know exactly where. It seems it was available in France, maybe also in Danmark. Anyway, its release was then greatly unnoticed by most, including me. Alas!
If a castle set from 1981 to 2000 doesn’t start with 60xx (like 6010, 6080, 6097) chances are good it is rare. If 60.. is followed by ..60, ..71, ..24, ..48 or ..79 the set can be considered rare, too.
And then there are the classic sets 375, 677, 383. Those sets were sold in large numbers, but due to the rare and fragile parts included they are hard to come by in collectible condition. This means: Complete set, including all bricks, all minifigs, all accessories, all original stickers and of course the original instruction booklet/leaflet. A heap of yellow bricks may be a yellow castle, but it is not Castle (375) if it comes without the aforementioned items. An original box is a welcome bonus which makes it even rarer. (While boxes for the yellow castle are not quite as rare as boxes for the smaller sets.)
