This came out during my Dark Ages. Had I ever seen this in a store I would have never exited my Dark Ages.

Cant say that I remember this being in stores, but rogue27 is right... I would have avoided Castle like the plague if I had seen this. The rock is well below the standards of TLC. Even KKII never sunk as low as this set (that includes the silly joust set). Oh well.

Random thoughts:

I prefer the term HUMP - Huge Ugly Mound of Plastic, or maybe Huge Ugly Molded Piece.

I didn't realize the cage part lifted off the wagon. I've never seen this set in person or looked at the instructions before today.

Some kind of odd bits in the construction. E.g. why the 1x2x3 panel wall rather than another tall slope? The wings on the roof are, of course, silly. The hitching is atrocious. I suppose they didn't have much of a choice with the dragon (though perhaps something using two lances), but it looks really awful in one of the alternative models in the instructions where they put it on a horse.

The saving grace of this set is the figs, particularly the inclusion of one of my favorite torsos:

If you can get past Willa and the silly batwing helm, the Fright Knights had a great lineup of figs for army building:

As a multi-theme builder, and if one ignores the HUMP, this isn't a bad parts pack, though one really cannot take the design seriously at all, and there are perhaps a few too many dragon wings to score too highly on the parts-pack scale (again, ignoring the HUMP... which is barely a real piece in my books... more analogous to the cardboard background thingys in some of the early Harry Potter sets).

The minifigs are excellent, and that is my all-time favourite barding, because of its versatility. As for the minifigs, I've always had a special fondness for the captured knight because, in my books, he was clearly a Royal Knight (my favourite childhood faction)--given that an identical fig comes with the Royal Knight's Castle (6090), and another Royal Knight comes with the Night Lord's Castle--even though I suppose there's nothing technically stopping him, in terms of fig design, from being the last gasp of the old Black Knights.

Parts: 8/10 (again, I am not inclined to actually count the HUMP)
Playability: 9/10 (the idea is good: lots of figs, a dragon, a prisoner, even a cave)
Figs/Accessories: 9/10
Design (contemporary): 3/10 (even for the Fright Knights, this is bad)
Design (universal): 2/10
Nostalgia: 7/10

Overall Score: 6.3/10 (C--not a high mark, at all, but a passing grade)

I loved this set, rock and all, as a child I was just fascinated with it! 8D

I think this Set looks quite good. The only thing, that I don´t like, is this plastic sone. They could have made it out of Lego.

At first glance, this is an "exciting" set when you consider the enormous (and rare) baseplate. However, once you realize the baseplate has no connectivity, the set becomes one of those in-LEGO knockoff sets, if that makes sense. A chance for LEGO to sell all of their leftover pieces for the series and make a little last minute $$$.

I was sorta in a dark ages at the time. and while I like the fright knights torsos I would not buy this set. the weapons are the big sword and the giant halberds both of which I have tons of and do not use. it also has the bat lord helmet which is O.K. as a one off but I have no need for more than one (and I have a bunch) The other helms are good I like the barding but the dragons are pretty much useless. it does have a chain (though).

My biggest issue with this set is the rock piece and the set design. The rock piece is way worse than a BURP cause it doesn't have any studs on it. you can't integrate it into your collection it is a stand alone piece. the wagon is ugly and weird. is it a stone wagon? a small building on wheels? it looks kinda thrown together. if the HURP had studs on it and the wagon looked like a wagon I might have thought about getting this but IMO this is one of the poorer LEGO castle sets.

Talk about B.U.R.P.s!!!!!

This set is okay for me. I like all the figs: the knights/soldiers are useful, and the Bat Lord is a fun one, and all the accessories are neat, plus it comes with a dragon, which is cool. I never understood the abundance of those wings up there, but the pieces are generally pretty handy. Not much play value, as I remember. So I would say:

8/10 for minifigures
7/10 for accessories (could have had some more swords, less halberds)
6/10 for pieces
5/10 for play value.

Overall 6.5/10.

I don't seem to recall that huge rock.... thing, though.

While I was not a fan of the dag-nasty "cave", I did buy the set for a number of factors, not the least of which was the black dragon wings, the dragon and the Fright Knights barding....

You see, with this set, I was able to replace the hideous trans-orange wings on all my black dragons with awesome black wings (mounts worthy of the Nazgûl), and the actual transport wagon itself, with the addition of a another storey or two ended up making an excellent siege tower....

...That said, I will admit that the Fright Knights were my least favorite Castle theme and it was only the intervention of the Ninja sets that kept me from going into another voluntary Dark Age (I ended up going into a forced Dark Age when I was stationed aboard a ship due to lack of storage space for LEGOs)...

One of the best ideas for a set ever. Traitor Transport. Not an enemy prisoner or hostage...a traitor. You don't see that enough in Lego. They need more like this, except they need to work on their...execution
