Two things that spring to mind right away are:

1. The gate moves smoother on the BM castle.

2. I much prefer the dungeon door in the KC though.

Hey,

I know this is a revival of an old topic, but I thought it might be fun to do head-to-head match ups as a semi-regular feature, so I put this on the front page and added a poll to the top of the thread.

I vote for the King's Castle - I prefer the gray color scheme, the portcullis, the fact that there's more room at the top of the towers, and also there's something odd about the way the battlements of the Black Monarch's Castle are built using those double inverted slopes. One thing that really jumps out at me in looking at both of these is the inclusion of 12 figs, which is so much better than more recent sets (Rocco's point in this thread).

They're both great, but I think King's Castle wins out due to it's compatibility (both look and wall design) with other modular sets from 1984 - 1987, and I like the shape and colors more.

The main plus for me on BMC is the two bardings which did not exist when King's Castle was released in 1984.

At first I thought it would be a tough decision, but then it became clear. It might be superficial, but the shield/lance decor on the KC is just so attractive. Also, as rogue27 mentioned, KC's ability to expand via other modular sets is a feature I wish would be explored more fully even today.

I own both of these. The thing that sets Black Monarch's Castle down one tiny notch is the smiley-face.
If you look at it directly from the front, the two windows are eyes and there is a gray brick smile right below. Once you see it is hard to take the dark and foreboding set as seriously. :)
