My best buddy loves lego so I decided to get him a set for his birthday. I'm trying to decide between MMV or KJ but I can't seem to make a decision.

So which set do you guys like better(if you have both)? Reasons?

Extremely tough call.....

If he likes to build castles and needs more gray, I'd go w/ the joust, but if he needs some peasants, get MMV. Honestly, I think the MMV is a slightly better value, especially if you can get it at $89.99 whereas the joust is more like $120, but they are both terrific sets.

I own 2 copies of the MMV and 1 copy of the joust, so I'm qualified ;)

I'd go for MMV. It's got a slightly higher piece count and it's a classic set. I don't think this will be on the shelves for much longer, get it while you still can. Joust is newly released and widely available, you/your buddy can just get this later on. Just my 2 cents. :)

The only place I can seem to find either of them around here is at lego.ca and they are 99.99 for MMV and 119.99 for Kingdoms joust. Which is crazy because just yesterday I swear they were 134.99 and 149.99! So 20 dollars difference now instead of 15.

Thanks for your input. Sounds like the consensus right now is MMV and since the price just went down today I might have to go order it before they are gone. Hmmm...

Edit: ahh that makes sense I was looking at the American prices by accident. For some reason the price difference is 20 dollars Canadian and 15 American between the both sets.

your a good friend if you get him one of those, because I find them expensive. Altough the Finlands price is much much more than the US. If I could get them for the US price from Lego I would have bought them already, by the looks and what I heard they are both great.
Ak Brickster said it pretty good, it is what your friend likes and needs right now more, Castle scene or peasant scene

Hello, do you need another friend? :D

j/k

Both sets are great and you can't go wrong with them IMO. If he cares more about playability, pick the Joust, if he prefers building MOCs, pick MMV.

I was going through this exact same situation this past Tuesday, except I was buying for myself, and I was in the LEGO store, looking pretty confused.

I spent a good 20 minutes looking and contemplating, then decided not to buy anything at all. But I seriously regret not buying MMV, since it will be off shelves soon enough. Perhaps I'll head back later this week. So yeah, buy him MMV.

MMV for now at least. It has a great building value and a lot of pieces that can also be used in for intance a city background (historical centre or something), whereas the KJ is more a castle set. And since it is just released I think it will be on the shelves for quite a bit longer. MVV is from 2004 or 2005 or something so probably won't be there much longer.

Released in 2009, The Medieval Market Village is a set designed to live just outside the walls of a strong keep, but might be surrounded by a low protection wall. Good amount of parts and bits, but not really a castle. If you have looked down the line and at all the sets available, there will be plenty of castles, wall parts and ways to build your kingdom up, but a ready made set of supportive buildings? Rare indeed.

Oh my goodness in my mind it was much older than that... Excuse me and scratch the thing of the date! But the argument does stand about it probably being pulled from production soon!

I'm actually not sure if he has many castle sets. I just always thought the medieval sets were the coolest so I figured I would get him one. I think what he tends to do is build the set, take it down after a while, and then use the pieces for his own creations. Would the pieces in MMV be more useful? I think the more unique/rare pieces the set has the better.

Thanks for all your comments. Right now I'm leaning towards MMV. I'm also shopping around trying to find MMV or KJ since I'd rather not have to pay any shipping fees. Does anyone have any suggestions of what stores might still carry it? I live in Canada btw. There is one store I'm going to check tonight and if I don't find either set there then I am stumped.

In Canada, the only stores that would have carried these two sets were official Lego stores, of which there are a few scattered around (Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto). There are also other some unofficial stores that are closely affiliated with Lego––i.e., they sell only Lego products––that carry these sets, e.g., Toy Building Zone in St Jacob's, ON.

If you're not lucky enough to live near one of these stores, you're probably stuck ordering from shop.lego.com and paying shipping.

I would buy MMV. For me it is probably best Castle set ever. It just looks perfect.
KJ is very, very nice set but MMV is far much better. And it`s quite unique - we don`t have many civilian sets.

It depends on your buddy...

If I was buying a 2nd of either set for me, I'd go MMV. I just finished the Joust tonight. And I loved it. But I think the MMV is the better set. It comes with two buildings, which are very well done. More peasant figures. Plus two cows.

I think this was a really close call though. The joust figures (princess, black knight, king, queen, prince, peasant boy) are all great. The tents and towers are well constructed too. The viewing platform is also nice.

The MMV just edges out the joust. I just really like the civilian commerce scene, rather than the martial setting.

Brickset gives the joust a 4.7 score and the MMV a 4.9, so it looks like my opinion matches the brickset users.

Right now shop.lego.com has free shipping for any order over $75. If you're looking to get either of these two sets, now is the time to do it. :)
