Join the weekly Classic Castle set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!

This week's set is 1584/6060 Knight's Challenge.

Knights Challenge, a jousting tournament for the Lion and Black Monarch knights was released in 1988. The set has a grandstand for a lady and two soldiers. Two more axemen guard this area. A peasant and his keg are included along with a weapons rack. Finally, two knights on horses with bardings joust to win the tournament.

This is the "HOLY GRAIL" of tournament sets, and one of the best castle sets ever. I love the fact that there is an audience here. What is the point of being in a tournament with no one watching, or just a king on a high platform. This set cannot be beat.

The selection of figs is supurb!

The knights are awsome and the barding is sweet. This is also quite the army builder, giving you "6" different soldier torsos, and Idea that has been lost today.

I also enjoy the barrier, its nice and colorful and makes it all the more fun.

The best part IMO is the peasant serving drinks from the tap. Everyone needs a beverage once in a while.

And the weapons rack is great.

You know what, this is the best set ever!

A good legend it would be!

Such a nice set, wish I'd been in the age at the time.

I really like the two knights, their helmets, weapons and not to mention the horsebarding really makes this a classic.

however I wonder about the tent-thing that the audience sits in, I do'nt like the shape of the roof":?"

Rest is very good!

Although I don't own this myself it looks like a great set. The selection of figures is great, lots of different coloured parts which look good. The bardings look really nice and the extras like the barrel of ale and the weapon rack add more fun to the set.
So all in all, looks a very good set.. definately better then the new KK2 tournament set.

ok, I got that set 2 days ago - thanks to Ben (viewtopic.php?t=2002)

The only thing that TLC did wrong about this set that people outside US didn't knew it was even existed until 2000 or so.

Anyway so the structure of it is not that big of course, but the color scheme is the old natural 80's colors which makes it great. We haven't seen those regular colors in sets for a while. It's probably one of the most festive sets TLC ever made for castles.

As for the minifigs - this set got 8 which is much more then most of the sets (beside few castles like 6080, 6085, 6086, 6090, 6081 and 375) and for a small set considering. The minifigs varity inculdes every single torso made for castle from 1984-1989 (not include the FM ones) beside 2 (the BF one and a red armor like in 6085). The 2 Bardings just make this set get a perfect score.

Score: 10/10.

P.S. TLC, next time you'll spent weeks and monthes designing sets and come up with a brilliant idea for a joust like set 8779, just make 6060 a LEGEND instead

It's amazing that Lego can get a joust set so right, and then continually and progressively issues worse and worse versions.

They even forgot to create torsos

This is an waesome set, I wish I had one(or more). Though the pavilion design is weak, the ale barrel and weapons rack are very cool. The set really has the atmosphere of a medeival tournament. And eight figs... that was good for back then, let alone now!

This set.... Duuh, its awesome! Bardings! People! A Maiden! What can I say. My favorite piece is the lion barding. I recently got my first two lion bardings off ebay.

The only thing I can think of is that I wish the helmets were the pointy visor ones instead of the grid ones, but I don't think those existed at the time, so I will forgive LEGO

The set itself isn't spectacular, in my opinion (though better than what we're seeing now of course), but it really shines as a minifig pack. 8 figs (including a peasant and a maiden) as well as 2 horses with bardings make this set a must have.

This has got to be one of the best sets of all time, at least if your a Castle fan. Its definitely the best jousting set. I mean, look at it: bardings, lots of soldiers, a maiden, weapons, a ciivilian-related thing (the keg). This set has everything but a lot of grey.

Parts: 7.5/10
Playability 9.5/10
Figs/Accessories: 10/10
Design (then): 9/10
Design (now): 10/10

Overall score: 9.2/10

If they released this as a lengend I like to think it coud fly off the shelves. Was it released in Europe? I don't remember it when it came out.

This is a very colorful castle set, which is a nice change.

I love this set. The parts are great and the minifigs included in this set are fantastic. Plus, I think this is the cheapest Lego set that ever included two horse bardings! If this set were around now, I would be a very poor man.

I used to think Jousting sets were stupid and over-priced.

6021 is to blame for that. It's rather a shame to think that things have gotten so bad that I would rather have 6021 than any of the KK2 sets today. Oh well.

Anyway, 6060 was a massive improvement over 6021 in terms of joust sets and I spent many hours just staring at this set. Sadly, I was only 12 years old and never actually had $20 to buy it. Even when it was on sale for $15, I never had the money for it. If I could time travel back to that K-mart store 15 years ago, I would buy every one on the shelf, and then come back the next day to buy any that might have been re-stocked overnight.

Anyway, let's look at the parts selection. For $20, you would get:
2 horses (one is brown! I don't even own a brown horse!)
2 bardings
3 Black Knights
3 Crusaders
1 maiden
1 peasant
8x24 green baseplate
Weapons, shields, goblets, cups, ale keg

Ok, if it was just that stuff I listed already, I think most people here would buy this in multiples for $20. As a minifig and parts pack, this set is already top quality. People thirst for this set due to the parts and minifigs included.

But wait! There's also a bunch of red, white, yellow, and blue parts! You can build something with all of them! How does that look?

Well, there are two knights jousting. Each knight has a squire! They have never done something that cool in any joust set since then. There are also what appear to be a lord from each faction sitting under the pavilion watching the joust. There is a lady under the pavilion which is a nice departure from the kings found in most joust sets. (That really old one from 1980 had a lord and a lady though...) A peasant to serve drinks completes the lineup. So very complete.

The pavilion is a bit small and simple looking, but you have to remember that this is a $20 set with less than 200 parts. I would say they did a good job of maximizing what they had to work with here, but the set design is not something that will drop your jaws with it's details or cleverness.

Playability looks to be high. Two knights to joust is a great start. But you still have 6 other mini figures. That should keep any imagination active for a while. Unfortunately, the parts included don't have enough variety to allow you to build much else with this set.

Anyway, this will be a rarity for me, and I will give this set numerical ratings out of 10:
Parts: 10
Design: 7
Playability: 8
