Your Favorite Castle Set Ever!

Post by sassymanjohnson »

I curious what everyone thinks on:
(1) What you think is LEGO's best Castle set ever, and
(2) What your personal favorite is...
and why?!

Post pictures of each too if possible. Now I'm going to go look at the sets and try to pick out my own selections. :D

1) mmv
2) mmv
Why? Because it is the mmv. And it is full of win.

1. I have not owned enough to say but...
2. Uruk-Hai army without question.
Useful pieces in bley and sand green. The new molds; 4 plus a new horse! (The longsword and spear were really new too if memory serves) The beautiful and versatile printing on the figures, helmets, and shield. That set made me a very happy AFOL.
Toilet paper goes over not under.

I want to agree with almost anything you say Str0ngbad simply because of you cool name and even cooler user pic (love HR!), but with that all said, I'll have to default to my old favorite, the King's Castle.

First Lego set I ever got. Horribly complex for me at the time, but forever ingrained in my emotional memory as pure awesomeness. Lots of small pieces, good gray, love the figs and the design. Just solid. :-)

1.A member of an order of knights founded about 1118 to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land during the Second Crusade.

1. 6080 King's Castle
2. Black Falcons 6062 Battering Ram
6062 was one of the few classic-castle sets we got and I'm definitely glad we did. Lots of great parts and playability, plus sweet figs :D

(1) 10193 Medieval Market Village - One of the few civilian Castle sets, and the best by far. Two great buildings, lots of figures and accessories, and a lot of great parts.
(2) 6066 Camouflaged Outpost - Nostalgia. The Forestmen theme was very different from all previous Castle sets when it came out, and I liked the Robin Hood flavor, the hidden passages, and the more organic structures.

I'm going to have to go with one that isn't really a castle.. Mill village Raid. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=7189-1. Whats the point in having castles without having something for them to defend.

My personal favourite is http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=6085-1 Black Monarchs castle. It was my main castle growing up and always the centre of many battles.

I think and honorable mention needs to go to the MMV and Kingdoms Joust http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=10223-1 Just because they are such awesome sets with many unique and interesting parts and characters.

Hey,

First up, I have to pretty much agree with everyone's picks above. Those are all on the top sets list. Just to broaden it out a bit, I would add:

1. 3739 Blacksmith's Shop - In it's day this was the most complicated build of any existing set (unsuprising, as it was AFOL-designed) and was a real education in building. It spawned a huge number of MOCs of civilian buildings with similar designs. I think you could reasonably argue (and I know that Dan, the designer of 3739, has so argued) that the MMV is ultimately a descendant of this set.

2. 6038 Wolfpack Renegades - Favorite faction ever, and they only got a few small sets (with a couple of cameos in other sets). This, though, was the jewel of them. Great little cart, lots of good accessories, and a secret compartment. Who doesn't love secret compartments?

1- I'm going to agree with Dyntar on #1, I personally think it would be cool to be able to have soldiers plus civilians, so that one could use their imagination to distinguish between the lords/nobility/knights, and the peasantry, and one thing I did when I was a kid to try to emulate a more realistic medieval setting was to set up the Guarded Inn, and then have a plain green baseplate with lots of flowers and leaves and things as 'farmland', because I was interested in the agricultural, and economic aspects of the fantasy world, even when I was a kid-- plus, seeing the movie 'Conan the Barbarian' and having his village raided made me think to myself "I wanna have some cool bad black knight come to the village and attack and then have the survivors seek revenge"... sure.. the plot was simple enough, but as a kid, your creativity and your mind are still developing, right?

2- Probably either Castle Guard(A set with Falcon knights) or Black Falcon's Fortress(A set with Falcon knights). I loved those sets so much, and my mom got them for me, and I've never stopped being a fan of the Falcon faction, even though it's long gone.

1. MMV
2. Helm's Deep- this one basically gave me enough gray to build my own castles. Also I loved the curved look.

1. I think that 7094 King's Castle Siege is truly one of the more epic castles, and a candidate for consideration as best LEGO castle ever. http://brickset.com/sets/7094-1/King-s-Castle-Siege
2. For my personal favorite, it'd be 6082 Fire Breathing Fortress http://brickset.com/sets/6082-1/Fire-Breathing-Fortress Which I believe was the first with a dragon. I loved the huge dragon head on the side of the castle as well as the cool dragon banners.

Happy Building!

I love:

http://brickset.com/sets/7037-1/Tower-Raid

The Tower is fairly ordinary but the siege tower looks utterly imposing IMO and also works well attacking a bigger castle. Also I love the box design which is one of my all time favourites and really makes the set pop.

I have the MMV but to be honest I prefer the Kingdoms Joust:

http://brickset.com/sets/10223-1/Kingdoms-Joust

I like the fact it is more action orientated and incorporates minifigs from the lowliest dung shoveller right up to royalty.

The Yellow Castle and the Medieval Market Village were the only two sets that I felt like I absolutely HAD to have. Whoever designed MMV was an absolute genius; It's pretty much the perfect set to go with any castle set -- there was a poll a few years ago in which it was pretty much roundly agreed to be the best set ever. That having been said, once I got that set, I built the houses, and they were so cute, I've never taken them apart. With the yellow castle set on the other hand, I spent days and days and days building and rebuilding one castle after another. There weren't so many specialized and small tiny pieces -- mainly just lots and lots of uniform basic bricks, with the most specialized pieces being arches and some extra tall sloped bricks. There were also what I would consider a nice, healthy number of minifigures: a troop of six soldiers, four knights, and four squires -- a total of fourteen for a respectably little army. So while I acknowledge that MMV can rightly lay claim to being the best set ever, just based on the amount of time and fun I had playing with it, I still have to say the orginal Yellow Castle is my favorite ever.

The original grey castle, the Kings Castle (http://brickset.com/sets/6080-1/King-s-Castle), is my favorite. It was my first big castle and I still remember getting it for Christmas, in 1984 or 1985.

I also have a soft spot for the Kings Mountain Fortress (http://brickset.com/sets/6081-1/King-s- ... n-Fortress). I can't really explain why.

My favorite modern castle is Helms Deep (http://brickset.com/sets/9474-1/The-Bat ... elm-s-Deep).
