What do people think of the new BURPs?

Post by Leo of Rothenburg »

In a few recent sets, a new large rock piece has entered into production. This new piece is a bit more visually appealing than the older BURPs. (If you don't know what the piece looks like, it is in this set on the right side: http://brickset.com/sets/60131-1/Crooks-Island sorry I don't have the piece number, but I couldn't find it in any archive) What's your opinion on this new BURP? Do you think it is more excusable to use while creating MOCs? (Because the old big ugly rock pieces are usually looked down upon when used in a MOC) Please let me know what you think.

It looks alright.

I think it's fine to use whatever you want in a MOC, and I've seen the old ones used successfully on numerous occasions. I think people mainly look down upon them because they would rather get a bunch of bricks to stack up rather than one big piece.

Hey,

New pieces are always interesting. It looks like Bricklink is calling it Rock Panel Medium Symmetric (MURP). In addition to being in light bley in that set, it's also in dark bley in the in the Prison Island set and from scanning through this year's sets on Bricklink I'm assuming there are a couple in the upcoming Volcaono Exploration Base. Chris M has a good picture of this piece here. He notes it's hollow on the back side.

.

I like how there are lots of studs on this piece, so it will be very useful to build off of. Also, it just seems a little less obvious. The main failing of BURP/LURP building, IMO, is that when you over-use these pieces it looks very unnatural. I was very guilty of this in this scene:

Now I tend to use a stack of BURPs as the main structure of a cliff or mountain, but then put enough bricks on top to cover up the regular lines.

Of course, as Rogue suggested, the main complaint about BURPs is that it feels like LEGO has shorted us on bricks by including them in a set. As Camelboy shows in this demonstration a triangular LURP takes the place of about 25-30 bricks. And this gives one shape, rather than the huge number of combinations you could get out of 25-30 bricks.

I'm not a big fan of the huge pieces. BURPS, LURPS, big castle wall pieces, those odd castle "tower" irregular hexagonal piece, the other 2x4 based "rock" or "crystal" tall pieces...they all kind of bother me. It takes so many bricks to hide them or make them not look like they have been used. This one looks more like bricks...but I am not sold.

But all of those above pieces are great for raising a base, which I do regularly and prefer to do...less 2x4's wasted that way. So I guess they have their place...hiding under a base for me.

This has a distinct advantage over the old BURPs. The studs are solid.

I don't mind burps. But this one.... I dunno. It looks like a stack of bricks.

MURPs will have their uses, different uses for different types of builders. I use BURPs and LURPs consistent with Lego castle set designs, so these may fit into some builds as well.

I like this quite a bit as it looks like it would blend in better and variety is always nice.

Hmm, so basically this piece is a corner rock piece? If so, it will be very useful to me.

I am happy to use BURPs for terrain. I find that in a large display, the repetitive pattern just blends away, what I really look at is all the other stuff, buildings, minifigs, and plant life.

I think the BURP's and their variations have many useful applications. While some argue that they are an attempt to short us on parts, I see them as very helpful in constructing large MOCs. Yes, you can over-use them, but that can be said of many parts. I think it comes down to builder preference and skill. There have been many parts that made me think, "That is stupid! that will never be used," but someone somewhere always surprises me with something cool. On a very rare occasion, that someone is me. :D

Here is one instance where I was able to use some BURPs that I don't consider too painfully obvious.

what I dont like about old BURPs is that they come upwards with that flat and vertical surface - pretty unnatural for a rock and a hassle to cover up.

the new ones instead seem to provide nice 'steps' to build on. not too sure if the fact of being a 'corner part' is a plus or a minus..

I personally can't wait to see the new corner burp on a lug order... great for mountain builds.

Can't quite see the best detail from this direction, but if you look closely you can see the burps incorporated in this build. corners will play a huge difference in design and future changes to this build. i hope to eventually have this as a corner piece to my mideavil lay out with either a dragons den at the top or a dragons nest with eggs.

I use whatever works. It's possible to build with BURPs; I like using vines and cliff-growing trees to fill things in. I did that on my very first public display, and got a lot of compliments for a clumsy build just because of that terrain.

I'd show a picture, but I haven't figured out how to upload to Flickr properly.

Do you mean how to get photos from your computer to Flickr? Or do you mean how to take photos on Flickr and link them in the forum?

If you have a Flickr account (free to sign up) and want to upload photos, just click on a little symbol near the upper right of the screen that looks like a cloud with an arrow pointing up. A screen will open in your browser that says "Drag and drop photos and videos here, or, Choose photos and videos." If you click on that second line a dialog box will open up so you can search through folders on your computer, but the easiest thing is to simply click on .jpg or .gif files (probably other file types as well) on your computer desktop, hold down the mouse button, and move the mouse over the middle of the screen. You can add multiple photos, edit their titles, and then click a blue button that says "upload" in the upper right of the screen.

If you have photos already uploaded to Flickr, Brickshelf, or another service, there is information here and here in the FAQ that shows how to get the right address for your image and the code to put links and images into your forum post.

Good discussion going here, guys.

I like the MURP better than the BURP or LURP because A) it has more "levels" to build on, and B) the solid studs don't have to be covered like you needed to do with the BURP/LURP in order to blend it in to the rest of your solid-studded bricks. (I'd still rather have the individual bricks than a MURP, but I think it will be an OK piece.)

Maybe a mix of BURP/MURP/LURP with a few bricks to transition / provide a more organic shape would be a pretty decent cliff face. Much less vertical and severe than a stack of BURPs.
