Dungeon Master Idea Hits Full Support in 3 Weeks

Post by Azaghal »

So perhaps this better belongs in Castle MOCs, or even General LEGO, but in a spirit of cautious optimism I present it here. Earlier this evening I found (linked from a gaming forum, not so unexpectedly) a LEGO Ideas project titled, simply, "Dungeon Master"

Now, there are a couple reasons to be skeptical that we'll ever see this, but I think it has some decent potential. It is modular which is cool, and even considered as just a parts pack this would be a huge boon to Castle builders of all kinds. The most interesting thing, to my mind, is that it appears to have reached 10K supporters since just the last week of January. In fact, it looks like most of them just arrived today, which could indicate a market for a less . . . gonzo Castle-type set than is currently being offered (or, admittedly, a surge of interest coming in from outside the usual LEGO audience).

It does seem a bit bigger than the usual Idea set, and it would have to be carefully scrubbed of anything too specific to Dungeons & Dragons (especially since, if I'm not mistaken, the same parent company owns both D&D and . . . Megablocks :orc: ), but I know if it did see the light of day I would buy at least one.

My initial thought is this ideas entry is too similar to Minecraft sets. LEGO probably would not want a new product which competes against a brand they are already selling.

Is this supposed to be a board game that plays similar to Hero Quest and other similar games?

I'd buy a couple of these if produced. Thanks for pointing it out!

Very cool. I also doubt it would make it through the vetting process for multiple reasons, but it's a nice entry. I particularly like the way these pieces:

could fit together in a huge number of different configurations to make different layouts.

I wonder where this was posted that it got such a rapid response. It would be great to tap into that existing LEGO Castle fan base.

Clearly there's a desire for this style of game. As a big fan of tabletop and miniatures gaming I find that Lego lends itself very nicely to this customized route for dungeon-crawling. HeroQuest is a great example of a standard board that changes based on the adventure and utilizes 3d furniture & minis to help guide the adventure -- it's also a ton of fun!

Dungeon Crawlers are the backbone of castle adventure games, and I would also be curious to know where this was posted that it got so many votes in such a short time. While Lego tried the castle gaming route with Heroica, and fans before tried with BrickQuest (and likely other systems too), there still seems to be a void waiting to be filled with a new Lego-based solution. Is this that solution? I don't know, but I'm certainly willing to find out and buy a copy (or two) if this materializes into an official Ideas set!

I seem to have read somewhere, even though I don't exactly know what it means, that it got posted on a D&D subreddit.

Ah, that would make sense. I've never dug into Reddit because the interface is all greek to me, but there are a huge number of people there from every corner of geek culture and pop culture.

Actually, they should delete those expansion packs:
LEGO Ideas Project Guidelines wrote:LEGO Ideas accepts projects that propose single, stand-alone LEGO products (sets). We don't accept projects that propose a series of products or a playtheme. For example, you may submit a fire truck design but not a “Fire Department Series” suggesting several products.

Please don’t submit projects with description suggesting the first product in a proposed series, or anything that implies your project intends to be more than a single, stand-alone set.
The existence of The Swamp and The Mine could sabotage the initial project.

I suppose you could be right, but the original set is a true stand-alone, and I don't think that the expansions necessarily helped to propel it to 10k supporters. Support for these after the fact might indicate to TLG that they could have multiple profitable sets come from this idea (though maybe the reason they try to squash any add-ons is because they don't want to have to share 1% of the profits on multiple sets?)
