Summer 2020 Ninjago sets

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

The newest batch of Ninjago sets is "Coming Soon" according to LEGO.com. Brickset has been able to review a couple: 71719 Zane's Mino Creature and 71721 Skull Sorcerer's Dragon, and they've also posted good pictures of 71718 Wu's Battle Dragon.

71718 Wu's Battle Dragon

71719 Zane's Mino Creature

71721 Skull Sorcerer's Dragon

There are two other sets in the game:
71717 Journey to the Skull Dungeons

71722 Skull Sorcerer's Dungeons

Set 71720 Fire Stone Mech is a giant ninja mech and does not seem to be part of the game, though the included figs fit the same theme.

In these sets the Ninjago team is traveling to the Skull Sorcerer's Dungeon to fight foes and right wrongs. A twist is that these sets seem to fit together to make a board game, or maybe it's more table-top gaming. Anyway, looking through the pictures, I see some things that will be really interesting to Castle builders:

Of course you've got the Ninjagos themselves, and various katana and other weapons you would expect, but check out these golden shields with lion crest, found in 71719, 71720, 71721, and 71722. Those would be awesome for outfitting a Narnian army IMO:

There's a silver shield with a dragon crest in 71717, 71720, 71721 and 71722. There are three of them in the smallest set (71717), so I can imagine these will be easier to acquire by buying the set or on Bricklink.

I love the detail on this sword, found in 71718 and 71721. There's a version with a black blade and white handle in 71717, 71720 and 717122.

I love these lavender goblin guys found in 71719. One of them is also found in 71718 and the other is in 71722. I'd love an army of these.

This guy appears to be the Skull Sorcerer himself. He's in 71721 and 71722.

There are these skellies, though I have to admit I'm not a huge fan. They are 2 in 71721 and also 1 in 71722.

There's one of this orc in 71717 and 71722 and two of him in 71720.

In addition to those figs and accessories, the skeletal dragon in 71721 is pretty awesome.

Anyway, that's my look at these new sets. I'll probably buy 71721 and then Bricklink some of those purple goblins and both a white-blade and a black-blade version of that new sword.

Yes, yes they would be awesome for outfitting a Narnian army. :D

In the present absence of a proper Castle theme from LEGO, these sets are about the best we can hope for. The bad guy minifigs in particular range from good to great in my opinion. (The Skull Sorcerer's robe print looks really nice.) Besides the weapons you mentioned, we get the flame/plume piece in trans-bright green.

I think you are right, some of these are pretty decent sets. They remind me a bit of some of the LotR sets.

Great write-up and post!

Interesting stuff. It's kind of weird how the Ninjago series keeps going back and forth between the more fantasyesque series, like this one, and the more sci-fi ones. EDITED TO ADD: I see the Destiny's Bounty looks like a ship again, for those interested in that.

Hey,

Not exactly on-topic, but sort of, and not worth starting a separate thread. LEGO announced today an exclusive set 40429: LEGOLAND NINJAGO World. I was unaware of these, but in the past couple of years LEGO has produced these sets based on the LEGOland parks that you can only buy at the LEGOland parks (maybe also at the Discovery Centers?). IMO this from last year is the best one. Anyway, I guess this is based on a ride at LEGOland (it's been years since I've been to LEGOland California). Some Asian-themed construction, but it's all pretty basic bricks as far as that goes, and it looks like it's all stickers, not printed bricks. So IMO nothing you're missing out on if you don't get a hold of this.

The new Ninjago sets looks promising. I went ahead and bought the complete summer release.
Love the new orc!
Finally, a skeleton dragon for my Undead Army!

Dont forget the new swords: Blades of Deliverance - Ivory and Shadow.

Yes, the new orc is the same color as the orc in Castle 2008.

I got 71722 Skull Sorcerer's Dungeons.

It has many nice pieces, especially for rockwork. There are many dark bley arches and slopes.

There is a mechanism that spans the whole set. You rotate the arm on the top-left and it raises and lowers stairs as well as slowly raising or lowering the cage on the right.

The mummy lady is interesting.

As is the scull sorceror's clothes.

There is a game mechanic to go with it, but I have not looked into that.

I'll have to find a good use for the trans-neon-green flames, the set comes with 4.

I have the skull dragon set and the dragon is really great in my opinion. It is not very flexible but Is probably my favorite brick built dragon. I don't have any of the other sets yet but will acquire some soon. The figs are excellent and I have a bunch from bricks and pieces. The swords are very useful too and look great with figs. My youngest son also has the dragon set and loves the dragon and he has the Ultradragon too. They did a nice job with this wave.
