LEGO ideas results Sept 2020 - no castle love

Post by Bruce N H »

Hi all,

Once again LEGO Ideas has passed over some castle-y goodness. The official choice is a life-size desk globe and a Sonic the Hedgehog set is still in consideration (probably IP negotiations). They also announced an electric guitar set based on a contest they held.

There were two castle sets they rejected and one ancient.

Legend of Zelda, Hyrule Castle - No surprise here, they've rejected multiple Zelda sets. I'm guessing they either already have Zelda sets in the works (given their recent relationship with Nintendo), and so won't go with an Ideas suggestion, or else they've already considered and rejected doing Zelda. In either case I think they should just stop going through the motions of considering Zelda Ideas submissions.

Castle in the Forest - This would have been the most straight-up castle set, but (sorry to be negative on this) I didn't see anything super special about it. There are tons of similarly-scaled MOCs posted in our forums that are much more interesting, both visually and in building technique.

Ancient Rome - Interesting, and my favorite of these three, but probably not practical as a set for sale. I think it would be cool if they'd do sets like the Architecture Skyline sets but of historical cities. I could see that being much more viable as a set.

Personally, and, I know, a betrayal to my castle roots, the Idea that I'm most disappointed they rejected was the Project Gemini proposal. I love real space stuff.

Hey,

Looking ahead to the next review period ("results in early 2021") there are a bunch of castle or castle-adjacent sets.

Medieval Market is easily the best of the bunch and a good set prospect. Builder Carlieti has hit the sweet spot of size, build complexity, display value, and play value. I would love to have this as an official set.

My other favorite is Temple of Hermit. Really beautiful Asian architecture here, though I'm afraid the construction difficulty would make this a little out of the range for an Ideas set.

Sticking with the Asian theme, I really like the Zen Bonsai - This would be a nice display piece that could attract buyers from outside the normal LEGO market. I've been watching Cobra Kai (no spoilers, we're still at the start of season 2) and so I've had bonsai trees on my mind.

Hero Quest is apparently based on a board game that was popular in Europe. As a gamer I'd like this to play. As a castler this would be an amazing army builder and there are also really nice constructions in this. This set would never happen, though, IMO.

Two Ideas based on Fantasy IP:

Avatar - This would be a nice smallish set. That flying creature is well done. Not sure if this is viable since LEGO already had an Avatar line and it's long-defunct.

Discworld - Great MOC, but I don't see this as a viable set.

There are two other castle-y buildings: the Mountain Windmill and the Ocean House. I'm not sure of the time period on either of these, especially the second, but there's no modern technology and the figs are castle appropriate. I particularly like the vegetation in both of these.

In addition to these, there are others that castlers would appreciate. Two pirate fortresses could be repurposed as castle sets by replacing the figs and changing some of the accessories and decor - Seagull Bay and the Fortress. The Indiana Jones Trilogy has a nice little microscale version of the Treasury at Petra (real structure in Jordan which is where they find the Holy Grail in Last Crusade). The Seasons in Time Calendar isn't castle at all but there's some nice vegetation design. Hocus Pocus house - again it's modern, but some of the architecture could easily be converted to a late medieval home.

Thank you for the writeup and preview, Bruce. I too was hoping for either of those castles to be chosen. Hopefully the blacksmith set will be announced soon (I'm hoping it'll be released early January).
