Have you considered horses made out of bricks from the Classic Castle era?
Here are some instructions for brick horses:

You might want to purchase the Orient Expedition set "Elephant Caravan." It has a nice big dark gray elephant. I don't know how historically accurate you like your collection but you could use those elephants for mounted soldiers or even to haul cargo.

The set "Scorpion Palace" has a light gray elephant, but it is much more expensive, as the set isn't centered around the elephant.

I know how you feel with the horse shortage, I only have 12 myself.

If you can wait untill this July the new KK sets are coming out. The smallest has a fully armored horse and will be less than $10.00 (most likely much less).

That set isn't on the front page! Wonder why? That's a nice looking set too. I guess all you Shrieking Shack guys can rest easy now; if Mr. McKee didn't give Sava a pic of all the KK sets, he most likely didn't give one of all the HP sets.

my guess is that LEGO doesn't want retailers to be posting not yet released sets out on the market.

I want to say how annoying this is...especially for the
Lugnet Castle Side-bar. Though, a quick fix would be to
post the released pictures on a separate Classic-Castle
Page when it is time to replace them on the main page.
