Well sith35 has started a castle, New pics

Post by sith35 »

Well I was uploading pictures of the Alien Queen head that I recieved from Armorman, when I decided I should take some pictures of the castle that I started. I borrowed the build idea from Blasterman after I saw the awesome work that he was doing with his. So now I am just trying to get some good critisim from everyone here. *Pictures have been resized.*

A view of the front. I am still figuring out how I want to add a door or gate of somesort. Some ideas might help.

Here is a view of the sides. I plan on the size of this to be huge so every section is going to have to connect to one another.

Let me know what you think. More pictures to come as this progress.

I'm not sure if we talked about this or not -

On the sides, where you have the connections, you could
probably save a few bricks by not having actual sides.

Did that make any sense? Basically, since the wall sections
will be butted together, you really don't need the ends to be solid.

Just an idea, but so far it's looking good.

Am I correct is concluding that this has been created almost exclusively with 1x2 grey bricks?? Wow.

To get more mileage from your bricks, use different colours for the end parts that will be covered when connected. Anything that will not be visible when all is put together should be in useless colours. Save the good stuff for presentation.

For doors, the tricky part is coming up with hinges. I would recommend using 1x1 plates with clip vertical (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=4085) protruding from the wall, connecting to 1x2 plates with handle (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=2540) on large plates. How you design the plates into doors is left for your imagination.

I look forward to further progress pictures.

To save bricks, you can you 2x2 slopes and 2x3 slopes in grey facing in since you have all that empty space. Looks great so far!

You have a great start there, I really like the 1 x2 look, I may have to try it sometime, I'll bet 1000 1 x 2's are nowhere close to being enough for something on a big scale though. What are the final dimensions you have planned for this castle?

Ok the size I have planned is 124x124 or 124x166 studs for the castle itself. I will be attaching more baseplates to the outer edge to add some scenery and buildings. As far as how many 1x2s, will there is close to 1500 in the picture alone so the amount I am going to actually use is uncertian at the moment.

And everyone thanks for the praise, but some credit does need to go to Blasterman, after all if not for his I would not even of started something like this.

Here is his thread.

Ok I have done a bit more work and I am happy with the progress. I am in the process of adding doors to it. Now the question is. Do I add just the doors or would it look better with doors and a drawbridge?

Overall view.

Very nice, so far. It would be more historically accurate (I think...) if you would have a portcullis and drawbridge. I'm not sure about doors and drawbridge.

I think it looks awesome so far, and doors would be better since if you plan for the elephant to go through, he would break the bridge. I would have the battlements 1 stud apart not 2, but that's your own choice.

On this scale, I think it's worth trying to mix in a few dark gray bricks randomly, to break up the massive plain colored surfaces. Why did you choose not to build a overhang?

To answer some questions:

I have been messing with a drawbridge and I have not got the look I would like yet. I am trying a couple of things and I hope it works out. The portcullis may happen, but that is when I tear down a bit so I can open up the center of the entry.
I think it looks awesome so far, and doors would be better since if you plan for the elephant to go through, he would break the bridge. I would have the battlements 1 stud apart not 2, but that's your own choice.
I basically set them at 2 because that is where the seams of the bricks meet. As I get to more of the detail work I will try it at one stud and see what looks better. And the elephant was just there to show some scale, but is showing up in more pics. Thanks.

I have considered this, and it is something that in the end I think I may be doing, but at the moment I am going with what I have the most access to for now. And the reason for the missing overhang, I just really did not think of one, so that may be a later addition as well. Thank you.

At the moment it is 30.5 cm. It will be taller probably around 40 cm at the most but, could be more.

Thank you everyone for the comments and suggestions. I did add some more pics for viewing. I was only able to pick up 1100 bricks this past time so not too much was done. More pics as it progress thanks.
