Custom Weapons

Post by SavaTheAggie »

Hey, shouldn't a thread about custom weapons be in 'Castle Customs'?

Not if we're not talking about altered pieces.

For the purists out there, I was inspired by THIS POST to dabble once again in MOC Minifig Weapons.

Because of this dabbling, I have finally created a MOC Minifig weapon that has illuded me for 4 years. I really hope no one has already thought of this idea, but if they have... well, I can live with that. Great minds think alike, right? But more on this new weapon later.

Someone once called me 'One of the greatest LEGO Minifig weapon makers' because of all the different assortment of purist MOC weapons I have used in my stories. I don't think that's accurate, simply because some of the weapons I've put up on my website are not my original design. And besides, even if I did wear that title, I've surely been dethroned by now.

But I wanted to share these weapons because... well, I won't lie, I'm proud of what I've been able to accomplish, and who knows, maybe someone will write an article about MOC weapons.

I also encourage anyone to post their MOC Minifig weapons in a reply to this post.

Just remember: these weapons are all 100% pure LEGO and 100% un-altered. No paint, no cutting, no sanding, no nothing.

Let's see, we have a bow: (my design)
Image

Here's an old pike (I came up with it independantly, but I'm not sure if I was the first)
Image

A dual edged pike: (99.9% sure it's not my design, don't remember how I came up with it)
Image

A crescent moon staff: (my design)
Image

A dual clawed fighting staff: (my design)
Image

A war hammer: (inspired by a non AFOL friend's design)
Image

A mace: (I don't ever remember seeing this design online before I posted it, but that doesn't mean I was the first)
Image

Coincidentally this mace was used in one of the recent Johnny Thunder sets, I was rather pleased to see it since I know it was on Lugnet before it was in the set.

Ok, now on to what excited me to post:

I've always wanted a chain mace, or a morning star, or whatever it's real name is. Basically what I'm talking about is a chain with a stick on one end (the weapon's handle) and a spikey iron ball on the other.

This was the best i could come up with, a chain whip:
Image

I'm having flashbacks to castlevania....

Anyway, tonight I came up with this design, which I am very proud of:
Image

If it weren't for Jojo's Scythe design, I never would have been able to finish this creation. It uses a light grey light sabre blade and a light grey technic half pin, with a 1x1 tile with clip on top connected to it. This is the base of Jojo's Scythe.

Added to that was an 8 technic gear, seen on the mace above, and a snake. That's right, a snake. I think it looks pretty darn good. It's totally non-functional cause the snake doesnt bend, and it's a little silly with the 'chain' all bent like that, but I think it looks pretty darn good none-the-less.

Other weapons can be found on my website, http://www.ikros.net.

So, now that I've rambled on and shared, feel free to share your stuff, too.

Good 'ol Tony to bring back Purist Weaponry. Ive always liked seeing non-modified custom weaponry as it adds to the creativity of Castle construction.

And indeed, this.. umm Mace? (im not up on my medieval weaponry glossary) looks AWESOME! Best part is, you can move around the snake and give the impression of the mace being swung in different directions. Such possibilities! BRAVO! I need to sit down with my detaily bits and make some weird-o weaponry.

Your weapons are really cool. I saw most of them on your website before, and have incorporated several of your designs and spinoffs of your designs into my creations. Thanks for the good ideas.

First off. love the mace. I think i will make it right now. I don't have any pics of my custom weapons so i can't show ya them but can explain a few. Ya know those flage holders? i use that and a lightsaber handle and a aquazone dart to make a spear/lance. I have also made a mace out of a harry poter wand and a 1x1 brick with the studs on the side. And a war hammer. Simaler to yours but bigger. Sorry for no pics. Hope to get some uploaded to brickshelf soon :D

Bow: Good old light sabre. That double socket works for a lot of things. Interesting results.

Pike: I used the same for quite a while out of convenience, but it really is a litle short for a pike. I've since replaced the light sabre blade with the umbrella holder to make it longer.

Dual-Edged Pike: Or, spear with butt-spike. Replace the lower harpoon with a brown wand/light sabre blade and you have a roman pilum.

Crescent Moon Staff: There's some pole arm from asia that is similiar to that. Can't remember it's name. Another option for those that like lots of varied pole arms in a unit.

Dual-Clawed Staff: Cool.

Warhammer: I've seen that around in various places. I use it as a maul (wooden, not metal) similiar to what english longbowmen would use to drive in their protective stakes (and whack the odd knight with).

Mace: One of the most popular constructed weapons for Castles.

Chain Whip: Or flail. Yeah, I've tried that but it just isn't very satisfying and tends to dangle too far down. I'll probably end up with a non-purist solution by cutting the chain up someday (the collective gasp just brings a smile to my face, so think of that before those that are outraged start posting). 8)

The snake-flail is an interesting solution! Can't say that I have seen it before.

Thanks for sharing!

Is flail the official term? I've always called it that but thought there was a more technical name.

In medieval terminology, there's almost always an alternative name. The flail, or military flail, derives from the agricultural flail, and thus the name. In europe it was usually called that, but there is a slurring of names depending on the damage-inflicting part that was often similar to those used on shafted weapons (holy water spinklers, morning stars, godendags, etc.).

I can't claim any originality on this (I stole it directly from Brendan Powell Smith, but I've seen it elsewhere as well), but boat studs and taps make good shields:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=600476
Again, not original to me at all, but two "road sign clip-on triangular":
http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/892
and a lightsaber bar make a shield, as seen here:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=318851
The square road signs as well:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=318082
The 2x2 radar is another good shield element. E.g.:

Actually, Leah's folder of Greek gods:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=17249
has a lot of good examples using lightsaber hilts in combination with other elements to make staffs etc. Also check out Poseiden's trident.
Biodragon's folder also has many variants that take advantage of the lightsaber hilt:

My signature weapon is a lightsaber hilt...

and on one end is a chrome radar dish:
http://www.bricklink.com/P/22/x85.gif

Capped off with a ruby, or any other gem of that shape...

and on the other end, is a chrome crystal:
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=52

This makes for a very fantasy-ish weapon or object, and the gem in the radar dish's color reflects on the dish, which you see if you look at it directly.

Hope that made sense, if not, I'll post some pics.

No pics yet, and most of the involved pieces are used elsewhere. I'll try to get some pics soon, though.

Interresting.

Apparantly Diablo II isn't the best resource for weaponry or armor, as first they call it "Chain Mail" when it is actually "Mail," and now they call a Mace a morning star!

A morning star is a variation on the mace. With a morning star, the ball is covered in several spikes. As opposed to the one in Braveheart that was just a heavy ball on a chain that made the guys head flat. :D

So the term morning star is accurate as long as the ball is covered in spikes.
