When I was a kid who did not know about the net I did not use any thing, I have not made a castle since then.

I have to go with other, because while typically I use nothing, I also try to use blue bricks whenever I can. (Well, actually, its quite often blue plates or baseplates.) :D

I voted "other" because what I do for water (actually, rivers, I haven't ever done a real moat) is build up ground with bricks or plates on top of blue baseplates. E.g.:

Someday, if I ever build my dream castle, I won't have a moat in the sense that you've described it. You see, it seems to me that an army laying seize to a castle could quite easily float invaders straight to the castle wall or at least drain the moat. Thus, I believe I'd build a large ditch out of Lego. Inside this ditch (I image this would be huge- don't let the connotation of the word "ditch" make it seem small ;)) would be all sorts of obstacles to invading armies and, if I were to get really elaborate, some sort of engineering feature that would make it so the dicht surrounding the castle couldn't be filled in by invaders easily.

For creating a moat I use slightly dark tinted mirror panes, because I like the reflections in the “water” so much. Real water would be better, but that is more a technical problem. You need to have a kind of basin or something, and that isn’t very practical for shows etc.

This is a model of “Kasteel Werkeren”, a typical Dutch castle, which is built, knocked down, en rebuilt several times. This is the situation as it was in 1661, after the last reconstruction.
Today, only the foundations and a old painting remains.

Cool! I like that idea! Thanks.

I have never made a moat. If I were, I think it would just be blue bricks.
I build, therefore I am.

drymoat

If I ever get into landcaping, I'd love to try my hand at a dry moat surrounding my castle. But that would take so much brick.

As you can see I use these trans bricks. Got a few from the LEGOstore in cologne.
If I need more water I have to use blue plates.

Moat

I don't really have enough bricks to build a full moat, but if I did it would be a large ditch filled with stakes.
