Tips on naming a castle?

Post by Magnus »

Kind of odd request I know, but here goes:

I've been working since the fall on a large castle project and I still don't have a name for it yet. It needs to have a name by the time I show it at Brickfest. Do any of you have any ways you tend to figure out names for your MOCs? This castle is a big concentric castle - two sets of walls but no keep, a little similar to castles I've seen pic of in Wales and France. And it will be held by the good old superbad Black Falcons!

I came up with a few ideas, but only one I kind of like, and I'm still ot sure:

"Castle Falconsgate" or just "Falconsgate" (I think this is my fave so far)

"The Black Falcons' Citadel" (what is a citadel BTW? Just another word for castle)

"Stonehaven Castle"

Any thoughts?

Obviously, this is a Falcon Castle. So it could be Falconhaven, Falcon's Hold, or Castle Falcon. Or you could base it off of the designer's name: Castle Magnus. Or Great Falcon's Hold. (Magnus, naturally, means great.) Or you can hope someone else has an idea. :D

"Kasteel Valkenhage".

Very Dutch indeed. But I think that choosing a name is more a personal thing.

BTW, a citadel is more a fortified city, including a castle. (Or a castle including a city)
That depends a little of how the lay-out is.

Maybe there was some great event or person connected to the castle that it should be named after. Or tack on: Hold, Keep, Castle, Guard, Citadel (not really appropriate to a free-standing castle), Gate, Haven, Pass, Eyrie, Roost.

...or maybe the designer overheard two peasants talking and mistakenly thought they said, "What's the name of that falcon castle?"

(Clean! That was clean! Blame yourself for any inferences!)

If it actually had a central keep I might go for "Falconsgate Keep". In fact I originally started by building a keep which is now made redundant because the inner wall is almost as high as the keep itself, so I don't think I'll incorporate it into the castle after all. Hmm, or maybe it can be part of the outer wall?

No problem! A Keep can be a part of the curtain (outer wall) or somewhere in the middle of the bailey.
You can make your own chose, without manhandle reality.

To keep the Keep? :)

It isn't reality so much as aesthetics and defensive potential I'm concerned with.

I could have the keep as part of the outer wall or in the bailey/outer ward (between the outer and inner wall). I'm just worried it might not look so cool, and it would definitely obstruct the field of fire form the inner wall. I was initially thinking of incorporating it into the inner wall, but abandonned that idea, because I want the keep to be modular, and something I can add to some of the wall sections to make a smaller castle if need be. If I put it in the middle of the bailey, that might look a little better, hmm.

I'm not completely finished with the castle, but it will be coming to BrickFest in August so there will probbaly be pics of it by then if not soon afterwards.
