After years of talking about it, I've finally actually built an entry for the Colossal Castle Contest, in the Medieval Husbandry category. Being both my first "real" Castle build in years, and my first go at the contest, I'm interested in some feedback - I feel like I may be a little rusty, or at least handicapping myself by not digging deeper into my collection.

I love the well and the fences. What could be improved is the road section, with more irregularity, perhaps showing a bit more where it goes, and the landscaping around the gardens. Also, the base looks blocky and inorganic. I hope that does not sound too harsh. Cheers.

Cute well and that's a neat fence design that I haven't seen used much

Wow, I really like this. It looks like quite the peaceful place.

No problem, I actually prefer the constructive feedback when I can get it. The "road" section was tacked on rather late, and would probably be a plate lower than the grass if I had planned ahead better. I'm not sure what I could really do for the base - I didn't want to dig up piles of 1x1 plates and try to vary the height of every stud, since this is supposed to be relatively flat farmland. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have tried to square off the edges of the area, but I wanted to have something that wouldn't be too difficult to put in a LUG layout in the future. Ideally, there'd actually be a pig pen somewhere else, where the pigs are now would be more visible, since that's where I did most of the more varied landscaping.LettuceBrick wrote:I love the well and the fences. I'm not sure if it comes across that the fenced-in areas are both angled separately from the rest of the landscaping. The nature of that wedge plate technique is that they had to be a pair of squares. Looking at it again now, I'm not sure I used the technique correctly - the angled sections are both a little raised here and probably shouldn't be.
