Building Discussion?
Building Discussion?
I'm new here, and I'm trying to find a place to talk about the actual building process. Is this the right place?

This forum is for displaying builds, but yes you can discuss building techniques here.

Re: Building Discussion?
Ok, well please let me know if there's a better place to put this. I don't have techniques to share, but I am looking for any information that people want to offer up. I read the entirety of this article: http://thebrickblogger.com/2012/08/guid ... l-village/. But I feel like I'm missing a great deal of basic information that seems to be understood. Does anyone have any ideas of where to look for simpler things to start with, I guess? I've built according to the instructions I have, and I've tried to find further one's online but they all seem to call for parts I don't have and modifying to compensate for the missing parts makes the rest of instructions unable to be followed. Thank you for any assistance anyone might give me.
Re: Building Discussion?
Derfel Cadarn's village guide is a wonderful way to start (and finish!!). If you look closely you can see that he explains all that it is needed to start some castle builds, from the simpler ones to the more complex.
But the main thing, in my opinion is having the right collection (ie, parts) and let you imagination guide you.
Of course seeing other builders MOCs and other sources (like drawings, images, etc) will help a lot, but you need to build and rebuild and experiment and let things grow on you. That how I started, at least.

Cesar is right that Derfel's guide to building a medieval village is a great resource. I've linked this, along with several others, on the CC how-to page. One thing that I would suggest is to go through and build some official sets. Start with either the Blacksmith shop set or the Medieval Market Village set. Even if you don't have the official sets, the instructions are here (Blacksmith Shop) and here (MMV part 1) and here (MMV part 2). If you don't have the exact parts, just use a different color from your collection. I think working through those sets gives you a lot of insight into different building techniques. Another good official set to try out is Helm's Deep - here are the instructions: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4. That one has really good ideas about making rough and curved walls.

Re: Building Discussion?
I would start by looking around on CC and Flickr and trying to figure out how people do things, then starting with small, simpler builds that you can complete to your satisfaction and building up from here. Asking for constructive criticism on CC is also a good idea. Just my two cents.
