Colossal Castle Contest 13

The CC Team is proud to announce our thirteenth annual building contest: The Colossal Castle Contest XIII. It begins on Halloween (October 31st, 2015) and ends on December 31st, 2015.
This contest is a bit different than other contests. We have a variety of categories each with one prize for the winner. Some categories require small creations and others need larger ones. Everyone, even with a limited supply of bricks, should be able to enter several categories. We are looking for creativity, not who has the most LEGO.
Check out the prizes. Classic Castle sets including the popular Guarded Inn, Knight's Stronghold, and Battle Dragon are prizes. Our thirteenth CCC also has it's share of haunted and spooky prizes including Black Monarch's Ghost, Witch's Magic Manor, Night Lord's Castle, and Vampyre Castle! There are also custom accessories and a custom moc prize. It truly is colossal!
Thank you to several anonymous donors, Rich Stehnach "Blackrock", soccerkid, and Wilfred of Ivanhoe for donating prizes for this contest.
The contest rules can be found here Enjoy!
Note: Please feel free to ask contest questions in this thread. It may take several days for an admin to answer your specific contest questions. It is important to know that the admins have real lives and it may take over a week for your entry to be approved. The submit an entry page is active.

Say I made an entry with a base size within the limits, but It folded out to show the insides and was bigger than the base size limits when folded out. Would this be allowed? Thanks admins.

And so begins the best LEGO building time of the year
For the Forbidden Fortress category, is the baseplate size still limited to 2 32x32s, or one 48x48?

So what about customs costs? and how much on average does shipping cost within the USA?
Part of me already doesn't feel up to participating because what's the point of entering a contest and not wanting to win (not that I'd expect I would) out of fear for expenses involved.

This is going to be fun!
Are custom stickers allowed for only the custom figure category? I ask because tiles printed to look like boards cost a lot on bricklink so I made my own design and printed them on clear sticker paper.
Time to build.

Super excited about this as always!
Question: If "ghost", "haunting", "undead", "spooky", etc., is not mentioned in the category description, there is no expectation to see the builds incorporating Halloween-ish elements right?

1. Your entry may fold out in halves or thirds. But this should be within reason. Past builders also constructed small hinged wall sections to show rooms in a larger moc. Please pm an admin if you have a specific idea for clarification.Dubbadgrim wrote:Say I made an entry with a base size within the limits, but It folded out to show the insides and was bigger than the base size limits when folded out. 2. Yes.soccerkid wrote:For the Forbidden Fortress category, is the baseplate size still limited to 2 32x32s, or one 48x48?
3. Custom prizes are typically light weight and likely will not have additional shipping costs. This rule is mainly in place for large and heavy prizes. Past winners can comment on these costs. We believe the costs were minimal compared to the value of the prize.Isundir wrote:So what about customs costs? and how much on average does shipping cost within the USA?

4. The admins are discussing this and will get back to you.Mark of Siloam wrote: Are custom stickers allowed for only the custom figure category? I ask because tiles printed to look like boards cost a lot on bricklink so I made my own design and printed them on clear sticker paper.
5. Correct. You can incorporate ghostly or haunted aspects to these categories but it is not required.mrcp6d wrote:Question: If "ghost", "haunting", "undead", "spooky", etc., is not mentioned in the category description, there is no expectation to see the builds incorporating Halloween-ish elements right?

For building a medieval ship is it allowed to use non Lego strings for rigging?

6. Yes. Non-LEGO string is allowed. You may also use non-LEGO cloth or paper for sails.subix wrote:For building a medieval ship is it allowed to use non Lego strings for rigging?

Re: Colossal Castle Contest 13
Is there any possibility that the white picture background would be changed to just a neutral background color?
I prefer to use a light blue background often, when doing snowy builds, so that the snow doesn't blend with the background, like I did for this picture:

Not a huge deal to include one white picture, I am just curious, as I think it would be helpful for builds that have a good amount of white to not have to use a white background.

For the forbiden fortress cat. it says to build something "featured in a haunted tale or legend", but can it be an invented fortress (not in any legend)?

Re: Colossal Castle Contest 13
Does the Haunted Inn category necessarily have to have a guarding ghost? Like can it be a ghost who just lives in the inn, floating around, doing ghost stuff?
I'm very excited this year! Lots of cool and interesting categories. And a big thanks to the CC team for hosting this once again. It's definitely a pinnacle point in the castle community!

7. No. This rule was made to allow for quicker editing of winning photos so that judging would be faster. Is there any possibility that the white picture background would be changed to just a neutral background color?

Re: Colossal Castle Contest 13
8. It should tie into some type of legend or legendary character (ie: vampire, leprechaun, witch, etc). The castle does not need to be a specific structure mentioned in a story.josdu wrote:For the forbiden fortress cat. it says to build something "featured in a haunted tale or legend", but can it be an invented fortress (not in any legend)?
9. The ghost or ghosts can be doing ghostly things in this category.ZacharyIslazy wrote:Does the Haunted Inn category necessarily have to have a guarding ghost? Like can it be a ghost who just lives in the inn, floating around, doing ghost stuff?
Re: Colossal Castle Contest 13
Are alternative Lego pieces such as those from Alt Bricks, Brick Forge, and Brick Warriors allowed in all categories or only in the custom mini figure category? I ask because these complimentary pieces would help with the scenery and adding the haunted feel.
