Country Watchtower - Resupply

Hello!

This is my introduction and first MOC. :)
I'm a newish AFOL, been collecting parts for a bit, but now finally diving into building.
Castle (and Pirates) are my thing. I was a lucky kid with a 6080 castle set and others of that era.

I've finished a little MOC: Country Watchtower - Resupply

Here is one image with more on Flickr:

I'm sure I could benefit from some CC.

Thanks,
Cozei (Kōzī)

Quite a tremendous build, even if it wasn't your first MOC! Excellent texture on the tower walls, and the transition to a wood top really works well.
The roof, vine, and little wood bridge are my favorite details. Lovely photo quality too.

As far as suggestions, I think the water would look better if it was consistent studs up trans parts, rather than switching to SNOT medium blue bricks in the front :)

Thanks soccerkid.
Great suggestion about the water!

That hadn't occurred to me, I was focused on transparent running water and maybe more opaque standing water.
I'll have to play with that more next time.

Some how I ended up leaving the back edge of the pond looking straighter than I thought. I really only noticed it after looking at the images.

Next time!
Which I think I will take a swing at an entry in the Summer Joust I saw announced.

A wonderful first build indeed! The overall layout is excellent, with the winding path leading up to the tower and nicely incorporated stream.
The tower itself is fabulous as well, I especially the top section; four sided roofs are no easy feat, but you pulled it off quite well.

The only suggestion I can think of (if you're going for historical accuracy that is) besides the water, is switching the cheese slopes in the windows to slope towards the inside. Here's an example of what I mean: https://www.flickr.com/photos/130093880@N02/ ... ateposted/

That's a small nitpick though, on an overall terrific build! Keep up the good work :)

LittleJohn, thank you for the thoughtful reply!

Totally don't mind the arrow slit nitpick. I debated whether I liked them in or out (flush). I guess I like the break in the wall for added texture they provide, even so.
I'd love to do some close to scale accurate castle building, especially a complicated gate with portcullis, murder holes, and all! Last year we took a trip to the northern coast of Wales and did a bunch of castle tours. They have been in the back of my mind.

I kind of closed my eyes and just made a scene with this. Originally the tower sat like a block on top of the grey rock, that was pulled down and integrated a bit more on the back.
My goofy door has no outside latch, though I suppose you could rationalize that someone is alway in the tower on post. :-)

I think I just lucked out with the roof that it even fit together. I'm still a bit ambivalent about the gaps along the ridges. The 4 pitches are at least fully attached to hinges, not just balanced there.

If anyone is interested I couldn't resist making a nightwatch image as well before I broke it down.
Probably easier to see on Flickr, image is a link.

I think the arrow slits are more visually interesting the way you did them. It really depends on if you care about being "accurate" or not, and I usually don't, haha.

I agree about the water critique, but overall this is a really good first MOC. As good (or better) than anything I'm capable of building! :)

Hey! Thanks for the aesthetic support. :)
So far building has been fun in part to be away from checking images real or other - just what comes out.
I guess I'll see how that goes, hopefully part of a fun journey.

Since bumping into the arrow slit thing I have a (I think) fun idea for a related MOC or two down the road.

Cheers
