March: Buildings for your medieval village

Post by Bluesecrets »

I am trying to bring about activity and content that is useful by bringing a topic up for each month.

So welcome to March where the topic is all about the buildings that are in your medieval village. This is the discussion thread for it.

What buildings are a must? What buildings are just too cool? etc

There may be a contest...I don't know yet. I know it sounds like an excuse but I am still very much dealing with the same medical emergency. Please be kind, understanding and patient with me.

So I think I would include a blacksmith and a grain mill. I'm not a historian but I think both are important to medieval society.

I have never built either except for sets. Maybe I should. It could be a good build for my yearly build.

I'd add:
--some sort of meeting place, town hall, mead hall, etc.
--church, temple, place of worship
--a whole lot of houses, *especially* a whole lot of houses

Great idea to spark more activity!
I've never thought much about what I'd put into a village scene as I always seem to lean toward building the fortress. :spin: I'd probably want to make sure I include a church, shoemaker, barrel maker, butcher, and all variety of shops. Those would mostly be dependent on inside details, so a cutaway view might be the way to go. Some builders are extremely adept at making the wattle and daub/ half timber structures and I always admire those.
Oh, and I've always wanted to make a large wine press, so probably one of those, too. :tasty:

I hope your emergency gets better soon, Bluesecrets.

I agree with the lots of houses. Beyond that, I'd say a merchant, an inn and some guilds.

A wash house near a river. Not sure the expression "wash house" is ok for a medieval village but I don't know the word in english :?

There is an inn, a merry old inn, beneath an old grey hill,
And there they brew a beer so brown
That the Man in the Moon himself came down
One night to drink his fill.

This thread is headed off to ye olde inn,
Bruce

I'd recommend a blacksmith or a fruit store. This is what my fruit store looks like. here's a link to the photos.

Also a carpenter is a great idea, and a windmill would be so cool. :)

I think the most important medieval village buildings are a blacksmith, a grain silo or storage, a fortified building, a carpenter shop, and a grain mill. I also think stables were very necessary, they were pretty much medieval garages. Horses were the main transport.

And like Mark of Siloam said I love wooden/wattle and daub structures. Like this blacksmith I built.
