August: Essential rooms in your castle

Post by Bluesecrets »

So I dunno about the rest of you but I rarely get around to putting an interior in my castles. I thought about that this morning and wondered what rooms were essential to be in my castle. So this is our August topic.

Same here about not usually including one- if I do get an interior in my castles it is very small and I have to limit it to essentials. The armory with stocks of weapons is always first. After that I like to include a sort of kitchen with food stores and maybe sleeping quarters.

I appreciate a good interior when I see one and always love spending lots of time looking at soccerkid's castle interiors.

Part of the question is what audience are you building for? If the MOC is going to be on display, like at a con or maybe in a window at the library or whatever, interiors are completely unnecessary since no one will see them. If it's a playset that you're going to be moving figs around for your own fun, then the more the merrier. If you want to take tons of pictures and post on Flickr showing off all the features, then again, lots of interiors are important. My building (when it happens) is more like a movie set since I like doing illustrated stories. So buildings are exterior only, and any actual interiors are separate constructions with only three walls so I can get the camera down at fig's eye level.

That said, if I were to include some rooms but not all in a large castle I think the key one would be some sort of throne room, as those can be big and allow you to place figs around in a scene. Also rooms with lots of little details are fun, like a kitchen, a smithy, or a wizard's workshop.

And I'm an odd duck... My building is primarily for display but I like to do full interiors. I am behind on the interiors for some of my castles though. People who show a lot of interest in my display will sometimes get treated to a tour of the interior of a building or two...

The privy that overhangs the caste moat, of course!

And a dungon room, mostly done on the ground floor level, by having the main entance to the keep on the second floor, by means of an outisde staircase. Such an access is pretty canon, as it made bashing in the door and storming the keep much more difficult.

With friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen.

I too rarely put interiors in my builds. I haven't built a true castle in a while, but even in my guard towers and cottages I have not put interiors. I avoid them for two reasons:

1. It makes outer wall and support construction easy if it is ugly on the inside
2. The MOC was designed to be viewed from outside as a whole building, not taken apart or peeked into

When designing a building, I do imagine the rooms though. Hopefully this will make my MOCs a bit more realistic.

The most recent 'interior' I did was for my Pizza To-Go MOC which has no fourth wall and an open counter. This limited my options on building the Tudor style walls.

Some rooms are like this, by their very nature they won't be completely enclosed, like the stables or the blacksmith.

Anyway, fly free little thread.
