Sounds very cool. Be sure to post links here when you make LotR customs so I can add them to my page of Tolkien LEGO links:

You can also check out those links for inspiration.

Hi,
I personally know of at least 5 people who've attempted (or at least wanted) to make a LOTR Lego movie but gave up in the end because of the immense scale of the task. It's really quite a job if you think about it, not just time-wise, but the scenic MOCs you'd have to build if you want the movie to look good. For example, my half-finished Balin's Tomb took me like 3 days to build and how long is that going to show up in the screen? 15 mins? But that being said, I'd love to see someone come out with a LOTR Lego movie; not a crummy one though, mind you, but one on a scale that can at least do some justices to Tolkien's genius. I've been working for years to recreate Tolkien's world with Lego, but I think minifig rendition of the characters plus an occasional MOC or 2 are as far as I'll go. I really look forward to your project with great interest, but my advise to you is to try a small scene at first to get a feeling of the different tasks involved. Good luck!!!

I just wanted to second the idea that the whole thing is perhaps a task you don't want to dive into. Instead, pick a particular section--e.g. the four Hobbits escaping from the Nazgul in the Shire, or the Battle of Helm's Deep--and try to animate just that. I've also been working for two years now to illustrate the whole book in bricks, but am only about half way through. And that's with still photography. Doing stop-motion animation is more than my patience will allow for.
