At last! It is finished!
Ever have one of those projects where you built half of it, had an idea, tore it down and restarted?
This was one of those projects. Only I did not tear it down once. It did it no less than four times to different segments. For the past year I have wanted to build a larger castle such as this, but whenever I started, I found that I did not have enough grey. Heck, when I joined just over a year ago, I had a grand total of 150 2x1s and handful of 2x2s. So, I started saving.
And saving
And saving until I had the funds to make several large orders over the past four months. Those 150 2x1s? I now have nearly 800. I know that I’ve gone past the 1000 mark on 2x2s with my most recent order.
The result of all this?
Well, just take a look

There are 12 more pics, but BS choked on me. I’ll upload the rest as soon as I can - EDIT: the rest of the pics are now up...
My own comments on this.
I really like the look of the 2x2s – a few people in chat liked them as well. The main keep turned out larger than expected, and I am pleased with the result. I estimate that there are well over 3000 bricks in this structure. And boy! Is it heavy! The gatehouse proved to be the trickiest. I swear, I must have torn the thing down several times to adjust for the gears. Originally, I wanted to make it so that the portcullis and the drawbridge would open simultaneously, but after several tries, that just did not work very well. In the end, I just got lazy and made it so that one can just raise the portcullis from inside the tower by means of a large gear there. Unrealistic, I know, but by that point, I had had enough. I started this in late September, so this whole thing took awhile to finish. This is also one of my entries for the CCC. I will put up a separate folder for entries tomorrow
Comments, suggestions, and constructive criticism are welcome.

Hey, I like it. It looks really good. The 2x2 bricks give it a nice pattern, I agree with you. The walls look nice too, there not plain. Wow 3,000 bricks awesome. Keep up the good work.
Oh, and yes I have destroyed a MOC that I didn't feel it looked right to make the changes it needed. I only took it down once though.

Hey, great work. I like the effect the 2x2's give it. I also like the two officers playing cards!
I like the overall design and look of the thing. It just al saoes "Completed MOC" to me. I must say the draw bridge and portucullis looks cool.
I have always liked the use of gears for rasing and lowering things. I bought a lot of Bionicles back in the day when they first came out, so now I have plenty of gears. Plenty!
I also like that there are details but not too many to overcrowd or overwhelm the castle. I also like the plainess in some parts. Such as the walls. If I were building a castle back in medieval times I owuldn't want to have reall fancy walls. Justa enoguh to give the attackers some fear when they see them. Besiegers would laugh if the walls were all fancy and so on. I must say I like just enough detail on the walls to make it looks presentable. Like Hlems Deep for na example, not too much extra stuff, but some.
A job well done for sure!

Hmmm,
I have mixed feelings.
Forgive me in advance if I offend you,
But I really dislike the use of 1 (or 2) by 2 bricks for the facade of a castle. I just can't decribe why I don't like it. I think that if it is supposed to be built of actual bricks, or cut shapped stones, that they should at least be bigger (The 2 or 1 X 4). I personally like building "Rocky" castles, with bricks of varied size and color. For a "Brick Wall" I usuaually use 2 x4 and alternating with 2x2.
The plainess of the castle too could be worked on. Although the layout is unique and intersting, the walls themselves are dull and uninteresting. The arched supports at the bottom were a good start. But I think more Protruding masonry, like butresses and balcony's would work fine. Some timber might look good on this.
All in all this a truly wonderful castle. The layout is excellent, I love how the castle opens in many different ways too.
Keep it up!

my favorite bit of this castle is the accesibility of it all. I love how it opens up. lends itself to great playability.
I think I would like to see more interesting things in the wall, I can see the points about "plainess" but also something to take into consideration... a lot of castles WERE plain. Its like looking at a modern wall now-a-days... unless there is a need to put something there, there usually isn't anything there... (did that make sense?)
all in all i love this castle.

Wow, I really like this castle. The drawbridge is great with the chains and the towers look good too. Also the bed chamber is very neat and detailed. You did a great job!

Nice Castle! I like the 2x2 construction. It gives it a distinct look, very regular. The portcullis is nice. I once tried the portcullis and drawbridge working together but couldn't get them adjusted right either. Nice job!

Really cool... and kind of unique, to use so many smaller bricks... I really like this castle. And I think it looks strong and sturdy with the plainess and small bricks... great job... I think you could add more detail if you wanted to, but maybe some figs doing stuff or something... the actual structure is really good.

Yeah, now that's a neat castle alright. Very well made indeed. But I can't understand why people think of plainess when they see the walls. Ever had a look at old english castles? They are PLAIN, as in very dull looking greyish plain like. A castle is supposed to look like this!

Whoa, something that's actually been finished. I am impressed.
I love to look of the 2x1 walls, though I agree that the higher towers could use some more interest. Perhaps if you offset some of the windows, so they're not all square? Also, some 1x3s probably would have helped you make the small windows look less... sloppy.
However!
I love the accessibility you built into the castle. It looks like you can play inside the whole thing without breaking it! I love all the little details, like the one interior bedroom, the armory, the stuff in the tower, it's all very cool. All in all, this is one of the most complete custom castles I've seen.

Not bad. I must say, this is a nice little castle which makes excellent use of basic bricks (the best kind).
I can't really say that I have scrapped many projects before completion. I find that I'm dissatisfied with everything I build as I near completion! If I gave up on it towards the end, I'd never finish anything!

Thank you for all your kind comments
Again, thank you all for your replies. The press conference is over now
Thank you. I believe the reason I used 2x2s is that before this project I was using mainly 1x2s - the transition was pretty easy. The more I look at it, the more I keep thinking that 2x4s would have served nicely as well, but I've had enough Bricklinking nowI love to look of the 2x1 walls
When I started this project, the first thing that I was aiming for was accessibility. Walls slide of, floors lift up and sides open. It turned out quite nicely.I love the accessibility you built into the castle. It looks like you can play inside the whole thing without breaking it! Ahhh, the drawbridge That was the worst of it I tell you. Combining looks with funtion is harder then it sounds. It all worked out in the end though and I am very pleased with it.Wow, I really like this castle. The drawbridge is great with the chains and the towers look good too. Also the bed chamber is very neat and detailed. You did a great job!
No offence takenForgive me in advance if I offend you
As do you, I have mixed feelings. In my own opinion, I really like the look. If I were aiming for realisticness and not regularity though, that's what I would do. Mixed colors would also be a thing I want to incorperate in the future. The problem is that there are only four shades of grey. The new and the old are hard to put together, so that's ruled out. Combining dark and light works in many instances, but in a project as big as this, it's hard to get right. As for a more detailed wall, I think you have a point there. If I'm not mistaken, the looks of the gatehouse is what you meant. But as others have noted, most castles (at least those built for purely defensive purposes) were unremarkably plain. What I'm trying to say is, more asthetic features would look good, but that's not what I was aiming for. As for some timber, that's the best suggestion yet - I am pondering on where I could incorperate that...But I really dislike the use of 1 (or 2) by 2 bricks for the facade of a castle.
