Beware the creature of the deep.
Greetings!
Now that I'm done with updating my website with all my MOC and story archives, I can finally post some new MOCs!
Well, this MOC isn't really new, since he's been on BS for a while, but he hasn't been formally introduced.
*ahem*

Hey Nathan,
That guy is uber-cool! I'd love to see a scene with him and Gandalf (perhaps as a vignette?). Also, Could you take a picture in low light to see the full effect of the glow?

Very cool, Nathan. I especially like the use of Vladek's visor and the gryphon wings.

Oh that is nice! HP wings and KK2 head... heh heh... perfect mix for a great MOC. This is what I think most the viking critics prefer when they say they'd like to see less bionicle-looking monsters - great job!

Well, I always like Tolkien MOCs!
Your Balrog looks a bit chunkier than I imagine him, but that's probably due to the necessity of the light-up mechanisms. The Vladek-helm is the Perfect! Balrog headpiece/headgear!
But the wings....
I dunno, they just look a bit too small for a Balrog. And then there's the fact that I belong to the wingless-Balrog faction.
But in general, it's a great MOC.
*Sits back, and waits for the "Are Balrogs winged?" debate to transplant. *

Heeheehee. Formendacil, are you a veteran of rec.arts.books.tolkien? If so, what was your username there? In the days before I started wasting way too much of my time in LEGO forums, I wasted way too much of my time in Tolkien and Lewis forums, including rabt and aft.Formendacil wrote:*Sits back, and waits for the "Are Balrogs winged?" debate to transplant. *
On the wings, Nathan, did you consider using the bat wings? I'd think those would be better on a demonic being. These wings are a bit angelic to me.

No. I've mainly browsed some of the Tolkien forums, but have refrained from joining them. Until recently....Bruce N H wrote:Heeheehee. Formendacil, are you a veteran of rec.arts.books.tolkien? It was a boring afternoon, until the Barrow-Downs caught me. Search for Formendacil, and you'll find me there...
But that's a little bit offtopic. And, yes, I am still a fully-commited Classic-Castler.
Actually, my main quibble with the wings is that they look too small. Quite apart from not believing in winged Balrogs, I just don't think that this wings look proportionately big enough. And I agree that they don't quite match the atmosphere of a Balrog.Bruce N H wrote:On the wings, Nathan, did you consider using the bat wings? I'd think those would be better on a demonic being. Ok, I'm not the Tolkien expert here, but I thought the book mentioned it being winged?(Whether or not it can fly is something else altogether)

It hinges on the interpretation of two passages: "and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings" and "and it's wings were spread from wall to wall". It's complicated, but in any case, it makes a great MOC. I love it! I agree with Bruce though, you need to set up a vignette.porschecm2 wrote:Ok, I'm not the Tolkien expert here, but I thought the book mentioned it being winged?(Whether or not it can fly is something else altogether)

ttbk
P.S, I'm firmly on the "no wings" side of the aisle....

Find me the passage. Quote where it exactly says that.porschecm2 wrote:Ok, I'm not the Tolkien expert here, but I thought the book mentioned it being winged?(Whether or not it can fly is something else altogether)

This is where the debate begins...
Anyways, whether or not Balrogs have wings is not the issue on a LEGO forum. The issue is that Nate's Balrogs DO have wings, and thus whether the wings as they exist look properly cool in the context of the fact that a Nate-Balrog DOES have wings...
As already noted, I think that they're a little too small...
PS: Hey there TTBK! It's always nice to see a fellow non-winger, although I don't consider the issue to be as important as many fans do.
