And on a positive note....
Two things that I think this MOC has going for it:
1) It shows that you can do a LOTR MOC without reaching for epic proportions;
2) Without revisiting the whole debate about whether TLC could/couldn't/should/shouldn't have made a bid to do the playsets for the movie, this also shows what TLC could've done had they so chosen (okay, they wouldn't have included quite so many figs, but the potential was there).
In any case, this MOC kinda inspires me to think about LOTR MOCs.
Alan
PS In case anyone is wondering , I don't think it's wrong to post negative reviews - in fact it can be refreshing sometimes - but I do like this MOC.

Hey! I resent that!SKM from BZPower wrote:*sigh* Hate to be rude, but like others have said, isn't Helm's Deep getting to be a bit old? And whilst I like some of the design, most of it seems petty...contrived. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice idea, but an old one at the same time.
It's pretty good, albiet far from minifig scale. Putting in the figs kinda makes it look absurd, but it could easily pass as an awesome mini-scale recreation.
And yeah, I actually do agree that we're seeing a lot of renditions by now (some much better than others), and if I tried just a biiiit harder I might be able to cram more links into this post, but just because something's been done before doesn't mean someone shouldn't be able to make it. After all, if people got scared off by seeing an idea already done, would we have the production photos of Ersh's model to drool over today? No.
Of course, I can't argue that one person doing more than one Helm's Deep is kinda pushing it... But hey, my first model was terrible, I needed to redeem myself.
I'd give the LEGO Company a pat on the back if I could. Thank you for the excellent sets. You are truely going in the right direction.

Well, I can understand the appeal of theme-based MOCs. MOCs based on popular licences (Star Wars, Gundam, Lord of The Rings etc.) are generally very popular regardless of their construction. Accordingly, a Helm's Deep is going to be viewed alot because of its pop culture origins. I really would prefer to see an original fortress, rather than the umpteenth re-interpretation of somebody else's idea.
Personally, I really think that Helm's Deep has become a bit too cliche. As a fortress, Helm's Deep really isn't that interesting. There are only so many ways you can build this model, and after a while it becomes quite old.
Kermisfreak seems to be a pretty good builder. I think his efforts would be better served on a more original MOC.
Later.

While it cannot be argued that this is the most built Tolkien based MOC, it is also the easiest and most playable as well. This version seems to small. DA's link-ridden post shows some of the better efforts, some I haven't seen. I really like the tan one with the giant Isengard army (what kind of helmets are those rounded ones?). I think every MOC has its redeeming qualities. Some just require more searching than other (a-hem). That said, this would have been better as a micro scale version.
There is nothing wrong with Helm's Deep MOCs, I hope we get more. But builders have to raise the bar higher now. Ersh777's rendition seems to be shaping up quite nicely (is it posted anywhere else on CC.C except Dark Avenger's post?). Let's see how that turns out.

Nope, Ersh's Helm's Deep started back in September of 2003. It looked super promising, but it never updated, so I asked him about it last summer. Apparently, the project was gonna require more bricks than he had (or could afford) and he had to deconstruct it for other projects. I think he told me it wouldn't be too hard to rebuild what he had, so there's still a chance it might happen. For now, though, the project's dead.
