Thermopylae

Post by RuthleSs__PaLadin »

Hello,

I just got done with this today...lot of work.

A little background on Thermopylae. One of the best points at which to hold off an invader was at Thermopylae, a narrow valley adjacent to the sea. The attacker could not pass to the seaward side, and to go inland would mean a significant detour. Other armies could risk this, but Xerxes could not. On the other hand, a defender could take a stand with comparatively few men.

It might not be 100% accurate, I know that. However I included most important points from the battle. The Spartans are customized as you can tell, King Leonidas is wearing the ninja armour, and so is his officer. The shields were a little work aswell. Thanks to everyone for their helpful suggestions on how to work with the Greek and Persian minifigs. Thanks JPinoy for your very helpful tip on the Persian shields. Also thanks to Red Bean for the Spartan shields.

Now please let me know what you think, and take a look:

After the Greeks learned about the betrayal, that the Persians found another way around, Leonidas tells the other Greeks to return home, to fight another day, but the Spartans will stay. Spartans knew they were about to die and they fought all the more fiercely for it.

Hey, I said this in the battles thread, but it might get lost in there. The landscaping on this is outstanding! Great job.

Its a really great looking battle scene. If you had more troops, then it would've looked like the movie... "The 300 Spartans".

Hoplites use spears, not javelins. Great work though, especially on the hills.

Speaking of which, where do they come from? I have several I bought on Bricklink, but I've never seen them in a set.

That is one of my altime favorite battles. I think your depiction of it is fairly accurate to. I love the landscape, I think you should build a castle on that!

DM

BTW, are those DM helms painted?

Hello, Im glad you guys liked it, it took me several weeks to set it up.
Speaking of which, where do they come from? I have several I bought on Bricklink, but I've never seen them in a set.
Actually I forgot to mention that the helmets were spray painted along with the torso (which where then hand drawn to give the muscle appearance). Somebody gave me the idea to spray paint, and since I had alot of black dragon helmets lying around, I thought it was a great idea. Of coarse there were two of Red Beans greek used also.
I love the landscape, I think you should build a castle on that!
Thanks, yea that is a good idea, but I think I am going to take a break from building for a while...have been bussy lately and have other stuff going on. I will discuss my next moc with you guys (though). Thanks again everyone for your +reviews.

Awesome! I love this battle, and you've done it great justice. The shields are great!

Have you read "The Gates of Fire?"

Oh yea, I just saw this posting on this thread... for the battles contest... personally, this was my favorite. :) The landscaping alone is very very impressive.

Thermo = hot. Pylae = gate. Gates of Fire (a bit of an artistic stretch, but there ya go!).

Anyway, great diorama!

Massive Investment of time man 8) Great work

The lesson from the battle: Making a stand without range units is suicidal, as a RTS player if i was King Xerxes I would lauch arrows first though
