LEGO Minifigures Online

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

There are a ton of stories out in the last day or so about LEGO Minifigures Online, a MMO that will come out later next year. In this game you and friends can cooperate to complete missions in an online world, using Collectible Minifigs. Future series of Collectibles will have codes that will allow you to unlock that fig in the game world (like Skylanders, I think). Different figs will have different powers. All of the demos include figs from previous lines, I don't know if that means they will re-release previous figs, or, more likely, that you'll be able to purchase those within the game. No clue on whether this will affect the price of future series of Collectibles.

This looks like fun! (it also seems like Lego's way to want us to buy more collectible minifigures. )

Yea! Not sure it will work for me though, unless they lower the price  !

I wasn't going to say anything, but when I preordered the LEGO Legends of Chima game at Gamestop last
February, I got exclusive BETA access to Chima Online. The code was printed on my receipt.

The guy at Gamestop said that was awesome, he had never seen that happen before.

I never did check when the BETA started for either one, but I do have the codes for them. One from the receipt and one from somewhere else. I'm going to have to dig them out now and see when I can try them

I hope that they give this more time to succeed than the last big game they had, "LEGO Universe" or something like that. I'd like this new one to do well so that we can have a "Castle" themed game. :D

Hey,

It seems they have a revenue model figured out for this one. They say in one of the video clips I watched on this that you'll be able to buy items as micro-purchases in the game world, so that follows the model we've seen with lots of phone apps. Also, since there will be codes included with future collectible figs, I assume that some percent of the revenue from the figs themselves will be considered as part of the revenue stream for the game. This is why I said above I hope this doesn't increase the price of figs in future series too much.

As to a future castle game, I think this one may fit that mold. I can't find it right now, but one of the articles said that one of the three initial worlds will be a fantasy world, and they had a video clip of a play-through of a little bit of that world. You can still use whatever fig you want (or that you have a code for, I suppose), whether it be a truly castle fig or not. Each fig has their own special abilities, which is a brilliant move in that it will drive you to get all of the possible figs. Some of the figs seem pretty obvious, as the fig themselves already have weapons, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the 'special ability' is for something like the grumpy old man fig.

It looks like you'll build up a folder of all of the figs you have, but for any given game play session you will choose three figs, and then in the middle of action you can swap back and forth among your three figs. You can also join up with others online to do cooperative missions, and they say that player versus player mode is coming soon. They've been running it for a bit with just in-house people and selected others by invitation, but will be opening it up to a wider beta audience soon. I assume this is what you got SSchmidt.

In the demos and sample art they seem to incorporate all of the existing Series 1-10 figs already. They didn't say if users will be able to play these right away. I'm guessing you'll be able to start out with an initial fig or two, and then will be able to buy access to these other figs within the game - then, of course, you'll be able to add the figs from future series as you buy them and get the included codes. It'll be interesting to see if they give some sneak previews of subsquent series figs through the game world.

Also, note that while the initial version will be PC based, they say in the future it will be available for Apple and Android devices. I didn't see any mention of Wii or other gaming platforms.

This sounds really neat! On the other hand the possibility of raising the minifig price to help support the game kinda seems likely. But I really hope they don't too much. I buy lot already, making them more expense might push me to skimp on some of them. :?
As for the Skylanders-esque route for the minifigs I think that's a pretty neat idea to combine actual minifigs with an online game. Hopefully we'll get many more series coming in the future. :)

Thank you Bruce for such a well informed post. This is incredibly exciting! I for one, eagerly await playing this game. The micro-transactions make perfect business sense, as the mobile gaming is very much moving to this direction. Free-to-play with little "inexpensive" transactions along the way to boost your minifig or what not.

Some characters I would absolutely love to play as.
1.) the new tiki warrior
2.) butcher
3.) ape suit guy
4.) chicken suit guy
5.) roman centurion
6.) bunny suit guy

Now that I think about it, I would love to play with most figures (with the exception of the robots and maybe race car driver). If you have to purchase the old ones in game, my wallet could be hurting. I would expect to see the old minifigs in game for a small fee 0.49-0.99. I imagine they would stick with the 0.99 mark if they will be for sale.

EDIT***
I don't think they would, but I would absolutely love to see RPG elements incorporated.

EDIT EDIT***
It says you "develop" their powers and abilities, which is somewhat RPGesque, but the fact that this is an MMOG as opposed to an MMORPG makes me think you do more of an "unlocking" type feature rather than spending skill points or leveling a character.
How awesome would it be though to level up a series 9 heroic knight and unlock new skills for him along the way? The again, too much of an in-depth RPG seems like it may be unappealing to TLG younger market, who is probably the target audience to begin with.

Finally got round to watching the video above. Some observations...

I imagine the accompanying minifig series will be released around the same time as the game is launched (late 2014). My guess is that these will be NEW figures, rather than re-releases of old series 'favourites'. Especially with the info that they will include a codeto unlock the character in the game. That said, I can imagine them creating variants based on previous figures (eg like the mexican dude in the Lego Movie CMF series). Whereas the CMFs from previous series' are mostlikely to be scattered around the game to be found/unlocked.

Some of the baddies, especially the fantasy ones looking quite exciting. I would imagine that TLG might have some tie-in sets planned, but their production might be dependant on the success of the game. Some of the baddies look a bit LOTRish, but with those licenses wrapping up at the end of 2014 (I say this as the last Hobbit film will be out), I'd hazard a guess that there could be some game related sets in 2015 with game codes for unlocking levels/characters/vehicles etc.

That said, 2015 is shaping up to be a HUGE year for films, so might be dependant on what licenses TLGis tied to (eg Avengers 2, Star Wars 7 etc) and how much product they have on the shelves.

Most of this is guess work, but I'm looking forward to playing the game (for free) and to seeing what new CMFs they produce (especially with the Mythology world previewed on the video).
Less talking, more MOCing.

This actually looks really nice! It also looks similar to the Chima Online game in terms of gameplay and graphics, which is a good thing, IMO. I'm quite enjoying the Chima game!

Okay you are off task. Please stop discussing gaming systems and stay on task. I don't want to have to lock a thread that has a purpose because of off task topics.

Also some of these comments are "chat-like" one liners that are not adding content to the discussion. Please remember you are to further the discussion with your posts.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hey guys, I have been in the closed BETA for LEGO Minifigures Online for some time now.

Anyway, it is my understanding that you can now sign up on the website for a beta invitation. This in no way guarantees you a spot, but you may get lucky. It is also to my understanding that they are now beginning to select a small few number of those who sign-up. They will be doing this in waves throughout the closed beta time slot.

I hope there are others who are able to get in!
