BrickCon08: Planning Thread

- Since we need to break away from the N. American meet thread...

I second the nomination of Josh as overall coordinator. :D

I appreciate the vote of confidence, Ted, but with my schedule it will be hard to make it down to planning meetings. I'm having a hard enough time making to LUG meetings as it is! :?

Thomas, I don't feel like you've let Castle down. You have done an excellent job, both with Castle and the overall Con planning. If you were still planning on coordinating, then please do. Anyone else would be green. The job would get done, but not with your finesse.

So as far as planning a layout...do we want to start the usual mass email to keep the planning secret? Or does everybody just want to talk ideas out here in the open and not care about lessening the wow effect on non-attendees that might spy on the thread?

For some reason, this line really cracked me up. :D

Why don't we just talk about it openly. Its easier to keep track of this way and we can give wedgies to any spies that we catch.

I would love to help coordinate but I live 5 hours out of Seattle, so...

As far as coming you guys can all count me in (notregistered but basicalyl it's for-sure!). I'll have some time coming up to be able to contribute much more than BfestPDX.

I'm fine with planning here, my only other concern would be not everyone who usually attends is a CC regular, such as Justin Major, T. Garrison, Steven P., the guy with the skeleton horde who's name I can't remember...was it another Steve?

Are we getting both Wunz's?

Unfortunately, probably not. I have high school soccer, and we generally have games all through-out that time. However, if I can get it as part birthday present (Oct. 7), and Chris can get me up there, as well as not having games (or weaseling out of a game), then I might be able to. Lots of 'ifs', but I am surely hoping so.

At any rate, you'll get Chris. Although it's not much, you'll get something... :P

I think it would be useful to find out how much space we have to work with before doing TOO much planning. :-D

Are we wanting to do anything like a battle of epic proportions? That was pretty successful. If so, do we want landscaping versus blank baseplates?

Well, regardless of space constraints we can still get some ideas down. Here's what's crossed my mind in the last 8 months...

- Last BrickCon we didn't plan a whole lot of landscaping and I think it worked well. Thomas and I had enough Base8 compatible road and river sections to throw something together on the spot pretty effectively. I'll be bringing as much pre-made Base8 as I usually do and I encourage others to try out the standard and build a few modules. Something as simple as a road and a hill always does a lot for the overall look of things.

- As far as planned features, the last couple cons I've been to there have been multiple snow-themed castle mocs. If this is going to be the case this year, how about a mountain snow-scape? A lot of my BURPs are probably going to go into a moonbase module (shh) but I'm expecting to have a few left over, maybe enough to build up a raised section if somebody else could help out. Mountain battle anyone? Oh, and is anybody bringing boats? Last year we didn't have any lakes or oceans, so should make sure and note that if we need it.

- Battles. I'm all for trying to top BF07's epic. Last year though somebody tossed the idea around of having multiple battles interspersed around the table, like adventurers fighting a dragon, skeleton horde ambush, and the classic rival faction lineup. I kinda like this.

- Apart from a main layout I had this idea: I recently came into possession of a big bag of classic yellow-era knights. Was thinking it might be cool to have a time-warp yellow-era display. I know at least one *cough*Richard*cough* member who I'm sure would love to do something like this. Maybe this could be our competition; have an award for the best yellow-era themed moc, reasonable exception allowed for newer pieces but styled to look like something out of an early 80s idea book.

I'd like to bring a ship and I would certainly like to see a section of "water".

Since we have more room this year (I think) would it be possible to still have a huge battle but also make a large city? The last two years the actual CCCity has been tiny. If everyone brought one random CCC module and one or two buildings we could have a really cool medieval city. A sprawling metropolis of medieval industry and commerce!

Cathedral will be there. Same baseplate size, though it is going through extensive renovations.

Does anyone else have Base8 ready to go for landscaping?

So far as snow...is anyone else bringing snow-stuff? Maybe have one end more "winter" themed and work its way into desert, then to green, then to water (ala BFPDX07)?

Battles are awesome. I've got a few dragons ready to go still built, so those will be available.

A contest would be fun. That could be one of the prizes for the Castle area.

I am building my newest tower (surprise, surprise). It will be built on cliffs along a river, with a smallish waterfall. I can easily make the cliffs Base8 compatible. The river will flow into a lake, so I can contribute to water features. I was going to build the river out of SNOT, but have it transition into regular studded water in the lake. My concept/WIP piece seems to look okay for that, but we will have to see.

I am planning on my layout being about twenty 32x32 baseplates, approximately. It would be nice to know how wide our tables are going to be, so that I can plan the layout accordingly, but there's no rush, as I'm sure that hasn't been decided yet.

Later,
Josh

PS. If we do another battle, or multiple battles, I can contribute a hundred figs or so. I just tore apart my armies, so I'll have to look them over and see just how many I have again.

Well, you may not get Thomas, but as far as both Wunz' are concerned my wife is coming as well...she's a Wunz now too.

As far as water, I'd love to get some going. Another Viking area might be neat, and any streams/rivers we (should) make need somewhere to go, so...
I'm also hoping on making a small pond with a small boat and some motion!.

I'd be up for a snowy (/mountainy) area, and I can hopefully/should be able to contribute to that. I'll be constructing a larger layout than last time, and I'll try to keep base8 in mind for that.

Welp, for now that's about all. I look forward to seeing you all in person again!

Most excellent. I also have a couple of "motion" ideas planned. One involves a couple of boats also. I guess exceptionally brilliant minds think alike. ;)

Or at least ours do...
I've been thinking of other possibilities as well. One involves a cart, but I dunno how I'm gonna get it to work.

Will we have power, or will it all have to be battery?
