TexLUG Meeting and Public Display (Now with Pics!)

Post by SavaTheAggie »

Howdy Y'all!

TexLUG is having its semi-annual state-wide meeting and public display in Houston on the weekend of October 7th and 8th, from 10-5 and 1-5 respectively. Details can be found on the Texlug website www.texlug.org

We're also having a mini-meeting on Tuesday the 3rd. We're getting some TV airtime to advertise the event, so if you're in town feel free to contact me for details!

Will the TV thing be viewable in other states?

Meh... probably not. This is not a Brickfest-sized event. But if I can get a copy of what goes to air, be sure I'll put it online somewhere.

The event was a great success, we had a lot of people come out (somewhere between 300 and 500 by all estimates). I didn't take as many pictures as I should have, but here's what I was able to get:

Post-Mod Gallery

All of the pictures, minus the ones of the cakes, were taken on the second day. When we arrived, before the Library was open, there was a crowd of people waiting to get into the event! Of course not EVERYONE was there for the event, but most of them. Some of the first pictures show the crowds.

As for the media coverage, the media event on Tuesday of which I spoke above went very well, and the footage from which was aired not only on Thursday morning as we were told it would be, but Friday and Saturday mornings as well! One of the families in attendance said they drove over an hour to see the event after seeing it on TV.

Great stuff.

P.S. I have digital copies of the media spots, but I just need to find a good place to host them.

Hey Tony,

What happened to Ulmaris? Did some invading army knock down the outer wall? Also who built the smaller castle and the Greek temple next to Ulmaris? Another favorite MOC is the triceratops skeleton - who built that? Looks like it was a great event!

Ed Southerland has posted his pictures as well, so feel free to check them out, too:

Ed's pictures are much better than my own, so you'll probably see some things in greater detail than from my gallery.

Ulmaris takes somewhere between 3 and 4 hours to set up in its' entirety. By only taking the center section to the event, I was able to set it up in under an hour and a half (it would have been faster had half of the towers not detonated in transit).

The smaller castle behind Ulmaris was built by Pat Hough, which was his first Castle. He's mainly into space, but now has a greater appreciation for the amount of parts it takes to build castle.

The triceritops skeleton was built by Matthew Sailors. I really wanted to copy it, but now that I look back I think it cannot be built exactly the way he did it without glue.

The Greek Temple is mine, I've posted teasers of it for almost two years, now. I keep tweaking it, changing it here and there. Mainly I've never posted it officially because I'm going to build a section of mountain for it to sit on, and I've never gotten around to it. Perhaps now that I'm beginning to get settled into the new house.

This will probably be the last time anyone gets to see Ulmaris outside of my home. It's getting to the point that the castle is just too big and too hard to transport. Had I only designed the castle in such a way that I could transport it in larger sections, or in sections that were more robust that wouldn't distintegrate so easily in transit. It's a fixable problem, but one I'm not willing to invest the money or number of parts it would require.

I wish I had gotten better pictures of Pat's moonbase module. While it isn't castle, it was skillfully executed and worth a look.

Funny thing, though. Of all the MOCs that were there, Chris MacDougald's four module Great Ball Contraption was by far the most popular. Kind of hurt my feelings a bit that kids were litterally brushing my Polar Express aside to get a better look at the GBC setup. I had to stop the train for all the kids derailing it from reaching over the tracks to retrieve wayward soccer balls.

Sigh.
