Which helmet would you use in battle?

I always have debates with my friends about this! I, for one, would use a great helm if I was in the thick of battle, though they can be cumbersome. There are many different kids, so give me your opinions!

The Aventail.

Flexible protection for the neck, and a sturdy helm. While there is no facial protection, it would be more comfortable and lighter than most other types.

Yes, that's a lot of good protection, though I would still want my beautiful face to be preserved :P

The rohirrim/hoplite style helmet, with the nose and cheek guards. Not only does it look cool, but it has just the right amount of visibility and non cumbersomeness(is that a word?) But still provides a good amount of protection.

I'm a fan of the Sallet, or a variation of it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sallet

It can go from almost a simple bucket design to a more elegant and crafted helm with a visor.

Do you mean this helmet Brickninja? Because it's also pretty sweet:

Close fitting, with full head protection and good visibility, these two are on the top of my list.

Yes, that general design, but shaped a little closer to this.http://collecttolkien.com/images/Helmet ... %20$30.jpg

I'd have to agree on this choice if I had to wear armor. But to be fair, I'm not an armorer nor do I have the first hand knowledge (fighting with real swords in armor) to make a fully informed decision. The sallet looks cool, but then so do a lot of them.

Definitely not the Corinthian Hoplite helm! Scary looking but leaves you practically deaf

Dude, I love the Corinthian hoplite helm! So awesome! I haven't taken offense, just there aren't actually that many helmet with the same problem. Gotta protect those ears. :)

Yes, it leaves you *slightly* deaf (!), but it was very effective at protecting the wearer. It was used by quite a few successful armies, and if it worked for them, it must've been quite good ;)
At least they scared the heck out of the enemy, another advantage!

I went to Edinburgh Castle in the summer, and there my dad (and I, though it was too big) tried on a great helm. Dad loved it. He had tried others, and said it was very comfortable and fitted perfectly. I just found that interesting, as people often say that great helms are rather uncomfortable.

What I meant to say earlier is that there aren't actually a lot of helmets that don't make you slightly deaf.

Agreed, but then your enemy has to put up with that too ;)
