I tried several in the last week or so. The strawberry bread..is amazing good. The mulled cider is really sweet but good. The corn casserole was good but needed salt or pepper. But..the cherry soup..ugh what a complete and utter fail.

Hey,

The problem that I have as a purist with resources like that "Middle-Earth recipes" page linked above, is that so often they have no actual relationship to Tolkien. They tend to be either generally medieval recipes (nothing wrong with that, just don't claim they are from Middle Earth), or, worse, just food with silly Tolkien names slapped on them - "Frodo's French Fries", "Sam-Ham", etc (see, for instance, the Denny's Hobbit Menu that was a cross-promotion with the movie).

I'd like to go through and find what foods and drinks are actually mentioned in Tolkien. I don't have time to do a thorough search, but I did glance through the two most obvious (to me at least) places, the Unexpected Party chapter in the Hobbit, and it's counterpart the Long-Expected Party in Fellowship.

In chapter 1 of the Hobbit we see the following:
Cake
Tea
Beer
Seed-cake
Ale
Porter
Coffee
Red wine
Rasberry jam
Apple-tart
Mince-pies
Cheese
Pork-pie
Salad (funnily enough, requested by Bombur, often describes as particularly overweight)
Eggs
Cold chicken
Pickles
Ham
Fried eggs

Surprisingly to me, the Long-Expected Party has no specifics on the food. There are several statements about there being lots and lots of food and drink, and descriptions of the hobbits eating their fill, but not specifically what they were eating (one reference to Frodo ordering that more wine be served). We do get that the Gaffer is an expert in growing "vegetables ... 'roots', especially potatoes". Bilbo refers to himself as feeling "like butter that has been scraped over too much bread." In the gifts left by Bilbo we see a couple of sacks of potatoes and several bottles of wine, and Frodo drinks some tea.

I think you're right, my mom was actually reading through that recipe list recently for some ideas for a friend's Lord of the Rings day party. It does seem like most of the food names are just some food that's not super modern with a middle earth character's name slapped in front of it, although my sister's and I did get a good laugh over "Balin' s Spiced Beef" :) . I once had a LOTR party about a year ago with some people, and we tried to stay iconic, eating rabbit stew, potatoes, beer(cream soda) and, you guessed it...... "Nice"(cold) fish, my precious. So juicy sweet. Among other things, of course, including lembas
