Build-a-model at LEGO stores

Hey all,

I did first see this on April 1 (by CC member ACpin), so it may have been a joke - I haven't been to a LEGO store in a month so I haven't seen it for myself - but it seems to be real (and I see pics posted on April 3 on Flickr). LEGO has introduced something new into the stores; the Build-a-model looks to be integrated into the PaB wall. There is a small set, and you pick out pieces to compose your set. According to the Brick Fan article the bins set aside for the Build-a-model will be somewhat distinct from the PaB bins. That is, they won't get upset if you put some of the Build-a-model parts in your PaB cup, but you can't just go in and scoop out a whole cup of the 1x1 round tiles with eye print, for instance (the one piece in the posted pics I'd be tempted to do that for).

These are very simple models, so we are not the intended audience. I guess this is to get younger kids building more freely, and also using the PaB wall. Unfortunately it means there will be 12 less bins on the PaB wall, and also some of the bins are semi-off-limits, so that's a negative.

Anyway, has anyone seen this in person? What are your thoughts?

I have seen the new build-a-models on the PaB wall. Personally, I'm all for them, as they add a bunch of neat new parts (including brick modified with stud) to the wall selection. Also, at the store I went too, other than the bins of new parts, the models didn't seem to take any space away from the standard PaB wall.

I have seen this, and also been chastized by a store employee for taking from the bins.

It is a negitive in the smaller stores. The one I went to over half to 3/4 of the wall were taken up by the mini model bins. So yes there is less for adults to pull from. The stores also need to post the policy on the wall about the new bins. Personaly I think the mini models deserve there own kiosk like the minifigures.

I like the idea of the mini models but it really does pull away from the wall for Afol's.

I've seen these at my local Lego store and had no problems with mixing the two types of parts in my PAB cup.
