I'm working on a viking one right now, and even though the dimensions are 120x100 pixels, the filesize is still 88kb (and that is with the lowest quality JPEG I can get, in Photoshop CS2), and I can't get the background transparent (forgot how). I'll upload it to B-shelf in the meantime, so you guys can see it.

For help on creating transparent backgrounds, check out this thread:

Hope this helps!

Get rid of the EXIF data in your image and it should be about 8KB. EXIF is a type of metadata written to images (usually by digital cameras) that contains information about the image. Using smcginnis' avatar as an example, examining the EXIF data I can see that image was taken using a Canon Digital Rebel and edited with Adobe Photoshop CS 2 for Mac. EXIF stores much more information than just those two things, there's information about the shutter speed, aperture, white balance, etc. When the image is large, the size of the EXIF data versus the size of the image data is negligible, but when the image is small, the EXIF data can be much larger than image data (as in this case). I'm not sure how to do it in Photoshop, but in the GIMP when you save a JPEG file under the "Advanced Options", there's a "Save EXIF data" checkbox.
Hoping to have a witty signature and cool avatar one day.

 If you hadn't mentioned the data, I'd have thought that you were psychic! :P O' course, I did mention, if you look in the right places, that I use a Mac, a Canon, and CS2, but I didn't mention it was a Rebel (or did I :?:).

GIMP = GNU Image Manipulation Program

It's a free, open source photo editing program similar to Adobe Photoshop. There's an older article discussing GIMP available in the archives.

As for how to remove EXIF data in Photobase, I'm not sure. Look around in the options when you're saving an image that's been resized. If I get a chance I'll download the trial version and see if I can find anything.
