I've been working on this project for a couple weeks now, Its going to be a replica (sub mini-fig scale) of St. Peters, Rome. So far I only have the facade completed, and I am currently working on the dome.
while I'm liking how the facade has turned out, I'm not too statisfied with the dome. I would especially like to hear ideas anyone may have about how to improve the dome or completely different dome-building techinques.

I really love that façade. Great detail.
A quick brickshelf search for dome reveals some interesting techniques.

Hey,
Smcginnis already linked to an Arthur Gugick dome study, but I wanted to point out that he's done a lot of domed buildings, including St. Peter's:
I really like, for instance, how he uses stickshift bases to round out more brick-and-plate built domes.

What exactly is a stickshift base?
To those who are about to Lego: toss me a few bricks.

A stickshift base is also called a small lever base.Blue Moon Knight wrote:What exactly is a stickshift base?

Re: st peter's, Rome-wip
Yeah, sorry if I was unclear. Take a look at one of Arthur's close-up shots to see what I was referring to.
Edit - Oh, man, I never noticed it before, but he actually has a pattern to how the little slot is pointing. They're not just random. His attention to detail is amazing.
BTW, I should have noted that I really like the WIP of St.Peter's facade, especially the angled part over the main entry and the little statues along the roofline.
