A Study in Bow-Making, Archery, and Fletchery

Post by Silverleaf »

OK, so I've tried to post this 3 times now and failed due to various technical difficulties. Here goes lucky number 4!

I've always been dissatisfied with how limited Lego's pre-drawn-back bow is. And I've longed for expanded archery. After searching numerous forums I found only one alternative bow (which I have included), but it came without a matching arrow and quiver. So I have spent far to long putting together small pieces in attempt to create useful bows, arrows, and quivers for the Lego Community to share. The following are my favorites of the results, and of course, what Lego study would be complete without an MOC to go with it? (Sorry I don't have pics on here- you'll have to use the links)

You should more often be unsatisfied with lego parts

You use very much original combinations !
Well done

These are great! I saw them a while ago on Brickshelf and wondered why they looked familiar. You used one in a MOC a while back.

Most excellent! The ones that use Exo-force robot arms are especially creative. I'll have to remember this in case I ever want to make some myself.

Some very nice ones. I like the curved light saber one the best. It lends it a nice continual curve with the horns. You MOC is nice as well. I actually like the lego bow design but hope to borrow some of your ideas sometime as some are just too good to be missed.

Thanks for all the ideas!

Very impressive!
I must say, my favorite is the basic folding bow. Do you mind if I use it?
I like all of them. I'll try to use some.
Once again, fantastic!

Nice work! You might try Brickforge https://www.brickforge.com/store/home.php?cat=269 to find a good-quality custom lego bow. I have several at home, which I find useful in minifig customs. These bows also have holes at the ends for sting, so you can make the bow drawn or not. I hope this helps you in your quest for bows!

Unfortunately, I have always been very much a Lego purist and can't bring myself to use outside pieces. It probably would have been much easier to use some non-Lego. In Fact, I was going to use some of the official lego rubbery hose pieces, but couldn't bring myself to cut it to length. Isn't it weird the things that can bug us?

Well, it certainly seems as though someone has put a lot of effort into developing a wealth of possibilities for the field of lego archery. Despite the fact that I still prefer the original lego designs, the sheer number of flexible ideas listed is enough to impress me with your commitment to the research behind what you are doing.
Furthermore, I was really excited to see your forestmen MOC. I do not feel there are enough forestmen MOCs to begin with (especially due to everyones forestmen enthusiasm in a recent poll). There are also not enough tree-built MOCs for the forestmen faction, and you have made an inspiring creation in the way of a tree house hideout. Nicely done...

Silverleaf,

I know what you mean. The first time I used brasso to remove a official lego design I felt somewhat like that. If the print had not been badly faded I would have left it. I tried using the horn bow idea with string but could not get it to stay very well without glue. Still some good designs of bows and such.

Brian,

I agree I have always enjoyed the official lego bow design as well.... maybe one of the few custom weapon makes could make some designs that are just like the lego format but with spiffed up arrows and bows? I'd like to see some variation of crossbows as well.

Feel bad not, my friend. ;)
I'm a purist as well, and let me say, this is a great solution!
