Here are some of my historic vignettes:

the Chinese discover gunpowder. c. 1000 AD

Stephen I receives the crown from the Pope and becomes the first king of Hungary. 1001 AD

Viking sailors discover Vinland. c. 1001 AD

Robin Hood enters English lore. 1228 AD

the Spanish Inquisition begins (bet you didn't expect that... ). c.1478 AD

Columbus reaches the new world. 1492 AD

Shakespeare pens Hamlet. c.1601 AD

And some that are not mine:

Sir Hruodland (or Roland) dies heroically. 778 AD By 77louloutte

Genghis Khan unites the Mongols and begins his invasion. c. 1200s AD By dunechaser.
