Looks ambitious!
Then again, so was Ulmaris so I see no reason why you couldn't make this MOC just as great. Good luck Tony. May st. Francis be with you!

It is probably the most ambitious MOC I've ever attempted. Ulmaris is impressive, but what most people who don't like it take issue with is the lack of detail - something I can't really do with the Cathedral. While I'm not going to cover it with greebles and widgets, I can't afford to cut corners.

The design of St. Patrick's has these "bays" or "nooks" along the inner walls, between the transept and the two towers. 8 of them, in fact, plus three large ones behind the altar. In the real cathedral these nooks contain shrines to various saints or religious artifacts. Right now I am considering, not a contest, but an invitation or solicitation for designs for shrines or various sundries from the community to include in my cathedral. I'm not going to ask people to send me bricks, but for them to come up with designs I can copy and install. If I used their design, I'd allow them to name it (within reason, of course).

The only stipulation besides size requirements (looks like its going to be 3x6x(?)) is it can not be light grey (since the whole rest of the cathedral will be that color).

I was just at St. Patrick's in New York, and I must say you've chosen a good model!

Great project.

Moreso when you consider that Cathedrals are wonderful buildings which are still in use today making them ideal for a modern display, or a medieval one. Looking forward to seeing progress shots.

St. Sava sounds great, but I think I'll stick with St. Patrick.
I'm anxious to see the finished project. :) means Laird in Schportnennian

 I'm a Baptist, but I must say that I think cathedrals look awesome! :) With your building skills, I'm gonna expect something great. You're really are going all-out with this project, and I am sure that it'll knock the socks off me. :eyebrows: I love Lego-built churches, cathedrals, and temples because (just like the real thing) they're so elaborate and detailed. Good luck and happy building! Happy early Saint Patrick's Day, me boyo!

I have never tried a cathedral (not having a large enough collection), but it sounds difficult. However, seeing all of the other MOCs you've built, it should be no problem. I'm looking forward to chapter 10 of Ikros!

Hey Tony,

This is looking great! I don't remember if I asked this when we were chatting about this a while back, but are you familiar with the book Cathedral: The Story of its Construction by David Macaualay (he also wrote Castle)?

Image

Definitely check it out from the library if you don't know it. Your son might like it too - it's the sort of picture book I would spend endless hours staring at when I was a kid, and he'd recognize the connection to daddy's project.

Also, in the Flickr comments you were talking about some of the reliquaries, altars etc that might go in the nooks. I can't think of any better examples than the work of Milán Bikics in his St Mirton Cathedral project. He's also got some amazing window ideas on display in that pic I linked.

Man, this looks impressive. And you got started just as I got the book I needed to start my massive project. Gonna have to follow this, so I can steal ideas.

Lookin' good...man, there's a lot of planning that goes into these big MOCs. I can't even imagine Ulmaris...

Does this mean we'll get to see more of Ikros? :eyebrows:

Hey Anthony,

First pics look nice. Like a real cathedral.

I actually have the book Bruce described. If you want some scans of the pictures inside or something, just PM me about it. It's a very useful book with well detailed drawings of the construction process.

Bruce seems to be enjoying his new home.

Bruce - I'm not familiar with the book, I'll have to look it up. And thanks for the link, hopefully it'll give me some inspiration.
