A gray/black castle
A gray/black castle
I wanted to know how anyone here combines large amounts of gray and black pieces to make a large castle. The only way i have done it is with a gray castle and a black outer wall. If anyone has pictures of their personal creations, that would be great.

I have. The big castle set for the Royal Knights has a black wall with light grey trim, so does the Black knights castle. I really like it since I have more black then grey. Another thing that would be neat, is if you have a bunch of 1x2's in light and dark grey, white, and black you can create a motted effect with them.

I don't have to many grey pieces and old grey is very expensive, so I build black castles with grey highlights.

Before I was blessed with my current supply of grey and dark grey, I used black very frequently in my castles. I still do, occasionally.
I've never really liked mixing light grey and black together, just because of the contrast between it. I do mix dark grey and black, however. But because I don't like mixing light grey and black, I tended to build in layering colors. Here are some of the castles I built in such a way:
The Fortress of the Mountain Pass
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=3199
This was my first publically shown Castle. It's a light grey castle held up by a black colored, chambered lower floor. I stopped being proud of this castle after I started building others.
Halcyon Castle
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=3200
This was my next build after the fortress. I took layering to the extreme, here, laying white on light grey on black.
Corincia the Fortress City
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=3201
The very next castle I built, I followed the white on grey on black theme, but I realized that this castle I had planned exceeded the amount of grey I owned. So I went with not only those three colors, but added red and yellow as well.
Halcyon Castle, version 2
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=73066
Years later, after beign blessed with my current supply, I still used black in a layer effect. This time, the black was not used as a lower level, but rather as part of an actual hill, theoretical earth, on which the castle sits. I also mixed in dark grey and black to create this effect, the black being the more algae covered and wet rocks in the lakeside hill.
I use black in other castles as well, but in a much more quiet role.
Stonebarrow Keep
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=55016
Much like Halcyon Castle version 2, Stonebarrow keeps uses a huge amount of black. You can't see it because that black is holding up all that dark grey landscape.
So there ya go. Thanks for letting me show off a bit

Like in Anthony's Stonebarrow, I have always thought of the dark grey being the mountain or cliff, and the light grey being the castle walls. Even though they would be the same color, it looks cooler this way.[/i]

Not necessarily, some castles were built with stone from quarries miles away from the building site, often different kinds of stone. In fact I know of know castles built with the stone from the mountain it was built on.Sir Terrance wrote:Like in Anthony's Stonebarrow, I have always thought of the dark grey being the mountain or cliff, and the light grey being the castle walls. My creation is mostly black, and has some gray. However, thanks to Lego's color change, I may have to rebuild it in the new gray.
Anyhow, I still have this soon to be re-done Guard Tower. Good thing, I ran out of old gray for the curtain wall sections.

Hello!
Back then, when I only had the bricks and castle wall parts from a few sets I owned, I usually built the bottom black and the higher parts light grey. Quite like Mr Anthony Sava did with Halcyon Castle One, just not as big :-)
Unfortunately there are no pictures of my early castle creations existant. Not that I knew of any.
Nowadays I'm in the privileged situation that I don't need use the castle wall parts (except the corner parts that I like a lot) and I have enough light grey bricks to build a decent castle with. Pictures exist but have been shown before.
Bye
Jojo

I have mixed black with light grey and dark grey in the first verion of my Lion's castle. It was also the first and last time I tried to incorporate the KKI wall panel. Man that piece sucks.

After a long absence, I have returned. I can't wait to start building again.
This is a bit off of my topic, but i have a question for Jojo that i have been thinking about. After looking at your pictures for your castle Falconstein, i wondered how the invading army ever planned on taking over the castle. The castle is incredibly well designed and is most likely an easily defendable castle that holds an army many times larger then the invading force (unless the invading forces are decoys compared to what is to come). Just wondering. I apologize for leaving my own topic, lol.

Last summer I experimented by making a black, Dragon Master themed castle. It was small, but working with black to make a single keep was a new experience for me.
Anyway, here are the results:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=50084
With the change of the color gray, it looks like I'll be building quite a few more black castles until I can accumulate enough of the new colors to make something decent.
