Hey,

"This Person" is LEGO. That vault is at their international headquarters in Denmark. If you go on one of the inside tours you have a chance to actually visit the vault. A couple of our forum members (including Ben) have been on the tour and visited the vault. They've got a copy of almost every set in their history to use as references for the designers.

Sealed copies of each set are kept for legal reasons. They can be used as evidence in court that TLG designed a set first. This can be used to stop other companies from copying LEGO designs.

In fact there are two vaults now. The first is shown to some Billund visitors and has the regular sets. Another location holds the remaining copies including rare promotional and exclusive sets.

Oh, I see. I was under the impression that this was a private collection that they guy was able to see after he had already done a tour of the Lego factory. Still, its a very nice collection; some companies don't even do that. Once its out of print, its gone, and the company forgets it was even made.

So which set or two is Lego missing? I seem to recall hearing what they were, but don't remember. Does anyone else?

I want 15 castle minifigures for only $5. :(

I'm sure there are some logistics behind this, but why doesn't Lego just re-manufacture whatever set they are missing and add it to their collection?

That would be a new run and not the same thing. Plus, without a copy of the original, they do not even know how this set was packaged. (Sources indicate it was a shop at home only set that was packaged in a brown paper bag. But this has not been confirmed).

There are many missing sets from the vault. Take a look at the LEGO Collector's Guide book to see how many are missing images.
