Castle Rock - Stages 1-4 (finished/abandoned)
Castle Rock - Stages 1-4 (finished/abandoned)
This is my first attempt at creating something in LEGO in about 10 years, so please be gentle
I tried and tried to build a small castle, but somehow couldn't find a good place to start... my first gatehouse was a small disaster, so I decided to start with the rock beneath the castle and then go from there... turns out much has changed and there are some really great MOCs out there that i certainly can't compete with... but I got inspired and tried to build a plateau on a rock for a castle...
Without further ado, tada... It took nearly all my green and dark-gray bricks, and all of my yellow ones so the support columns beneath the rock are not as good as they could be...
I'd really like some (constructive) criticism on the rocks, and the whole thing in general.

Re: Castle Rock - Stage 1 [WIP]
Very cool rocks. I can't make those rocks even if I follow instructions on the how- to place. Anyway, good start.
You've got to ask yourself one question,"Do I feel lucky?" Well do ya, punk?

This looks great! I'm assuming you are going to integrate the two "spires" into the castle walls, eventually? I did that with the MOC I'm currently working on (see my Flickr stream for pics).
Anyway, it looks great, and I can't wait to see it develop. I like the dark green accents on the rocks and at the base, and I like the King and Queen up there surveying the site of their new home too.
Keep up the good work!

Nice start. My only thought is that when you begin building a wall on top of those rocks I would make sure that long flat section between the two pillars of rock (where the king and queen are standing) gets dressed up a little so it doesn't look like a straight, perfect line. That's just a suggestion of course.

I reckon that looks pretty good. I'm keen to see how it develops.

I like it. I like how you used the black flats at the base of the rocks as well. It helped give it some relief/contrast.

They're actually dark green, but I agree with you. It really sets this apart from a lot of the other rock work that is out there (my own included )rapsmocs wrote:I like it. I like how you used the black flats at the base of the rocks as well. It helped give it some relief/contrast.

This holds lots of promise! Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Re: Castle Rock - Stage 1+2 [WIP]
I found some time this weekend and instead of doing something productive I expanded the mountain
I'm guessing there will be a drawbridge between the two rocks, and another one from the smaller one to ground level... maybe a small river between the rocks, but haven't found a water technique that I like, (I don't have enough blue/transparent bricks for some of this fancy SNOT water)

A river would definetly add to the landscaping, I also really like your use of the dark green slopes on the rocks. Looking very good so far!
Re: Castle Rock - Stages 1+2+3 [WIP]
Now that I've come to the conclusion that I have no follow-trough I've completely destroyed everything and kicked up the size a notch or two
It has now been transformed into a mountain pass, soon to be guarded by a wall+gate and garrison...
The light grey bricks are just there to mark the place for the walls and/or other stuff that won't be part of the rocks itself...

While I liked the old mountain, I have to say that I like this one better. Can't wait to see the progress on this.

Re: Castle Rock - Stages 1+2+3 [WIP]
I'm really impressed with how this is shaping up. The sloped ramp section is particularly nice.
I was wondering if you planned including any water? A small waterfall and stream might add a nice splash of colour on the base?

Increasingly irritated by the way real-world work impinges on building time...

That mountain is starting to look really nice. I'm still most fond of the flowers though. The yellow is so bright and cheery among all that gray, and that one flower with the circle dish is really cool.
